Help me out here. I was on a golf cart path when a street legal pulled up behind me and started blowing the horn. He went on by at full speed.

Do street legal carts get both the road and the gold cart paths? Shouldn't they be restricted to the street?

Yes they can use either the street or path. No he should not have been rude by blowing his horn and speeding past you. Don't let one bad apple spoil the whole basket!

Let me kindly correct you. You were on a Multi-Modal trail and not a golf cart path. A golf cart path is the path servicing the golf course.

You are correct! Multi-modal's are not just for golf carts street legal or otherwise

but the multi-modals do have a speed limit of 20 mph...of course, there is no one to enforce it.

The OP does not say what he was in/on the multi-modal trail. Was he in a golf cart, a bicycle, a Segway, or on foot? Was he in the center of the trail so the street legal could not safely pass or was it on a curve or what? Was the full speed of the street legal over 20 mph and the OP was just putting along at 10 mph? :shrug:

I didn't know that. I know that golf carts are required to be capable of going less than 20mph, though. The only speed postings that I've noticed on multi-modal paths is the one on the Morse bridge, which is 10mph (totally ignored by most).

Maybe the LSV was beeping just to let him know he was passing him so he would stay to the right.

If I remember correctly, way back when - that was the proper procedure in a car when you were passing on a two lane road.

Hi Jim: Despite opinions to the contrary your post was clear and you were wondering if a street legal art gets the best of both worlds. I was under the impression that unless there is no other choice street legal vehicles belonged on the road owing to their special designation. On the other hand there are so man golf carts not licensed that can exceed 20mph I suppose it doesn't matter; albeit it makes it less safe on cart paths. It is unclear if the driver of the LSV was inpatient with you or being considerate and sounding n audible to let you know he was passing.

they can operate on either, up to 20mph on multimodal paths and 24.8 on 35 mph roadways, they may also cross 45 mph roadways

Definitely a operator problem but then at least some of the GEM carts are wider than the standard carts and could be a problem on some of the bridges.

Sorry, I' m out of town.

It was two way traffic. Carts moving on both sides of the path. My cart is set at 20 and that is what was on the speedo. We were approaching a section of divided cart path when the horn started. He may have wanted by before the split.

After he passed me, he took off as fast as that cart would go.

If your going to drive a street legal vehicle, why not a motorcycle?

It's not a big beal, but if you go to all the trouble to be street legal, drive on the street and get what your paying for.

Golf carts are not equipped to go that fast, or should I say brake from that speed. Do you really want to risk your retirement to go 10 mph faster?

and once you exceed 25 you are an unregistered motor vehicle because you are outside the parameters of a LSV...minimum ticket of I believe $253 plus!

I try to use "street" courtesy on the cart (MM) paths.
When I'm in my car I keep to the right except when I pass someone. When in my cart I watch my mirrors and if someone comes up behind me (and is going faster than I am) I wave them by.

Simple, and it works great!
