The Villages Buffalo herd.

When we came to The Villages in 2004 there were about 100 buffalo in the herd. I heard that we had them as a tax write off of being a nature preserve. I love our buffalo, but I have notice a dwindling number of them. Are we always going to have them? They are a good attraction for the grandchildren and fun to see especially when the babies are born. Please don't get rid of them.

Develope gets a tax write-off, WE don't. I think they move them around. We have a nice buffalo "pen" over here by Bob Evans, however, some days, no buffalo. I do think they move them around but I have NEVER seen them move so it must be EARLY in the morning!

I do hope that when grandchildren visit these animals, they do not touch or try to feed them. This is quite dangeous. While the little ones are cute, the older ones can be fierce, especially if one of the young ones is there baby. Please, don't touch or feed the buffalo. They suffer the consequences if you do.

Buffalo are still here and apparantly well taken care of by the developer. We were passing by the area near Sumter Landing and a crew of 4 workers were herding the buffalo onto a trailer. The foreman explained to the crowd that had gathered to watch that they get a few at a time into the trailer so they spray them to keep flies off of them and also to innoculate them. They do get moved around in order to let the pasture regrow.

One did die behind our house. It did not belong to the Villages, but it belonged to a private individual who owns the land behind us. After about 5 days, the stink was so bad we could not go outside. We finally had to call Marion County health department who issued a citation to the owner. He still did nothing with the animal. We finally called a nearby farmer who went with his front end loader and buried it for us.

You get the homestead exemption no matter where you live in Florida. The buffalo have nothing to do with it.

No matter what the issues that have to do with the developer and the buffalo, it's neat having them nearby. I get a particular kick out of the warning sign on the fences around their grazing areas about survivors being prosecuted!

Buffalo may be the epitome of Americana but "Read my lips" ,,,,THEY STINK..... the reason you don't notice it is because of the DOG DO DO on your front lawns......
Get rid of the DO DO and you will not be so thrilled with the nickel logo....

The logical reason for the above fact is that the developer owns the buffalo, he owns the land, and he pays the taxes. We are entitled to the same thing under these same circumstances.
