Snowbirds come down and stay the season.
Snowflakes come down and go back throughout the year.

A snowbird is someone who comes at a regularly scheduled time to Florida to avoid the winters up north and then heads back north to avoid the Florida heat. The name snowbird is representative of migratory birds who fly south in the winter.
A snowflake is someone who shows up at random times throughout the year. We use to be snowflakes and would come to our home in The Villages whenever we had a long weekend or a few days off. We just showed up without notice like a few fluttering, unexpected snowflakes.

The way I understand it is this:
Snowbirds -- come here during the winter season (Jan-March) and go back home.
Snowflakes -- come and go all year long. They just stay for a little while.
FROGS -- Come here and stay till they CROAK :)

Think you may have that backwards, lol. The snow crabs are the people who live here all year long and then are upset when the other homeowners come back from their other homes, crowd them, plug up the grocery stores and "their" restaurants and are the worst drivers ever because there is never an accident in The Villages when the snowbirds are out of town.
And don't forget "the Vacation birds" who leave the end of May and are back early to mid-September.

We thought that snowbirds (like us) own in The Villages to escape winters and snowflakes were those that rented a home for a few months and then headed back north. Are we right or wrong?

Peachie, I think those are Frog Crabs, a rare but hardy variety.

There is no "right" or "wrong". Everyone has a different opinion. I think that you are a Seasonal Resident .. someone who owns a home in The Villages and occupies it seasonally, usually during the winter.
Snowbirds may own or rent, but usually stay for the season. Snowflakes flutter around, and sometimes melt away.

We come and go for a couple of weeks at a time at all times of the year. Our neighbors refer to us as "butterflies" apparently because we also come and go during the hot months. I guess maybe that beats being just a snowflake.:duck:
