In the last half hour, we have experienced -- best I've counted now, including the outage 15 seconds ago -- 12 interruptions to our service, shutting off everything electrical in our house.
Our computers are connected to battery back-up, so they are staying up.
We are in the Village of Pinellas at Evans Prairie, just south of 466A, west of Buena Vista. Our friends just north of 466A and about a half mile to the east of us are NOT experiencing any outages.
We have been on hold with SECO for more than 10 minutes, getting apologies for the delay... we had to call their customer service number in Citrus County to get through... Sumter and other closer county numbers ring busy.
Great service...

Called Seco and they apologized for the outage and said they were working on it.

Fernandina unit 208 has problems as well. wonder what it is. hope it isn't a brown out.
If power goes out and you still can use your computer, go to SECO's outage map page. Currently 6 Sumter County members are without power.
SECO Storm Center (http://www.secostormcenter.com/StormCenter.aspx)
You can report an outage online as well as calling.

This happens in new areas....here, just guessing as they hook up more new grids(??). Generally it happened at night in our area when we lived there a few months.
Someone said at that time it was "unacceptable". I just shook my head.
Probably you will not get a definitive answer as to why.
Just keep in mind that it is an annoyance, not a disaster.
And it will pass. Not a brownout. A new area Pain in the neck.

I tried to submit the info on the report link but it said to call them. Of course, you can't call because the number is busy. When I checked on the map as to the current outages, it shows all is normal in Sumter. Guess there is nothing to be done but drink a glass of wine and chill in the pool. All you guys who asked if you really need a pool...

So tired of all the negativity from the same sources. A two hour power outage is NOTHING! Go to a country club or rec center or movie up north. Here in WA state we have had power outages in the capital city of Olympia for 5 to 10 DAYS (not hours)- in the rain, in the winter when kids have to get up and go to school and parents need to get to work. Neighbors help each other, life goes on and you have a little adventure! My goodness!

I am in a rental villa in Fernandina. It seems the power outages have caused the A/C to shut down and it has not been coming back on when the power comes back. We just turned it to off at the thermostat for a few minutes and when we switched it on it started. Yeah!

could the outages be related to this project:
Village Community Development Districts (http://www.districtgov.org/)
SECO Energy Project on Buena Vista Boulevard
On Monday, September 9th, SECO Energy, your locally owned and operated electric cooperative, will begin installation of a new electric line in the Villages to meet the needs of a growing population and to supply energy for the expansion of Brownwood, including new medical complexes, retail facilities and a large chain grocery store.
The project is expected to take approximately three months to complete and requires 57,000 feet of cable to be installed in stages along the transportation trail along Buena Vista Boulevard from Highway 466A in the Villages to Highway 44 at Brownwood.
All transportation trails and tunnels will remain open thanks to the cooperative efforts of SECO, the Villages Community Development District and the Developer. There will be short, clearly marked detours as the work progresses in stages along the trail.
At this time, it is anticipated that all work will be conducted during daylight hours. Residents are encouraged to use particular caution in the areas where work is taking place. For more information or if you have questions regarding this project; please call your local SECO office at 352-793-3801.

I think most of us remember power outages that lasted for a few days in winter or summer from where we came from. Think of the people on the Jersey Shore! A couple of hours without power is nothing to complain about. Go to dinner, have a couple of drinks, go to a movie. If necessary, go to a hotel.
Complaining about power blinking or minor outage is as trivial as the man who did not get vanilla ice cream on his pie and posted a complaint on TOTV.
I agree with buggy one, look at the people on Boulder right now with the flooding. The loss of homes and the loss of life. I would take a power outage for few hours anyday! Certainly may be annoying, but not life threatening.

Last year following Sandy we had no power for 6 days and it was cold. No power means no heat either. Lines at the gas stations hours long with people fortunate enough to have a generator trying to get fuel. Others with a generators had them stolen. You actually didn't hear a lot of people complaining.

I think what Diane is saying is to "compare apples to apples". I too have had electricity off for weeks after my homes were damaged in multiple hurricanes, but that electricity outage is impossible to fix overnight. This outage seems like a slow reaction to probably an easy fix which SECO most likely caused through their own negligence. A different scenerio totally. I for one hope it does not become a recurring problem due to all the new construction.

NOT! my elec supplier - jersey central power and light - is 'light years' behind providing its customers with up-to-date transmission equipment! my 8 days without power were the result of out-of-state repair crews having to search for and when not found MANUFACTURE rube goldberg replacement parts for what they defined as ANTIQUE equipment that they had not seen in AGES!
the only aspect of shared misery came while standing in line every day for a bag of ice for the refrigerator and a half case of bottled drinking water; and waiting outside the car in the cold and wind for 5 gals of gas for the generator that we paid thru the nose for and waited in line to purchase on day 3 of the outage.
the power outage described in this thread is nothing in comparison!

Perhaps, Diane, it was when you stated that it was "another nail in Florida's coffin" and that SECO only provides lip service that some people took umbrage. Many of us like our homes in Florida and feel SECO does a very, very good job at providing electrical service. Unfortunately, electrical outages and issues can occur even with the best electric companies and in the most wonderful states in the Union and that may explain why it's happening with SECO in Florida.
Hoping your power is back to normal soon.

There's no validity in what you say. Power flicking on and off is nothing more than a minor nuisance. What we experienced following Sandy was miserable and life threatening. We were lucky to only be without power for 6 days and believe me, there was no shared misery, just misery. Families with small children and elderly people had no heat for days. They had no lights and now way to heat food or keep what provisions they had in their refrigerators and freezers from rotting. What little dry ice you could score was worthless but it made the politicians proud.
The utility companies failed miserably in getting the power up. While some of the outside power companies were useful, others accomplished nothing. While I was out with my chainsaw clearing downed trees 3 days after the storm a bucket truck from Michigan stopped by to ask for directions. I asked if they were in the area to get power back for us. The power company guy said nope, they were just looking for downed lines.
We were taking ice cold showers in late October and early November in New York with absolutely no indication of when the situation would be resolved. Recovery from this storm was mismanaged by politicians and power companies. Oh, and by the way, there are still those who have not recovered from Sandy.
Shared misery my butt! For you to try to magnify this simple annoyance into a great tragedy rivaling what we went through last fall is laughable.

Although it was annoying, this is the first time we have experienced any type of interruption. Having lived through snow storms in October and major storms in August taking down trees everywhere and leaving CT residents with no power for 15 days, this is a breeze. I'll take SECCO over Northeastern Utilities any day.

Best to just wait until the power is back on for a while and then go reset everything.
SECO in my opinion is an excellent company and has regular people just like us and our families working there and I don't believe they had a conspiracy to aggravate or give lip service to anyone. Mistakes and problems happen to any service. After working for a public utility company for many years you can bet they were just as upset about having to answer about what happened as those affected.
Why not ask for a tour of their operations and you will see it is not that simple....

Yup...got home this evening, clocks were blinking and I had a message on my phone from SECO saying they were aware of the outages and were working to repair it. In keeping with the S**T Happens frame of mind, I think it's really nice of them to do this. I lived in SW FL for 23 years, had loads of outages during the summer months, and later in winter when we were all COLD (60 degrees) and put our heat on...haha...and never got a nice message from the electric company. We seem to be OK now...I've been home for an hour, and no outages.

I counted over 70 times that our power went on and off yesterday between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm. Seco would not answer their phones, just rang busy! Finally I called another county and they told us they would send someone right out. NO ONE EVER CAME. We have lived in many different states and have NEVER had these kind of power problems.

Other than an inconvenience, the only issue that I see is the potential power surging that could damage electronics during the on/off cycling. We got a call after 9pm from SECO saying they were sorry, and working on it. Our electric came back on at about 7ish. It was nice outside, so just open the windows next time folks, or go to the pool. :-)

Fluffy. Welcome to the forum. I hope this is the last of these problems for you.
I always wonder why people call the power company. At night you can look out and see if the power is off beyond your home or call a neighbor during the day. Does it help to know whether the power is off because someone had too many twofers at the square and knocked a pole down on the way home or because they were hooking up the power for the new Sweetbay that people will need and use?
We are growing here and sometimes when a new limb is sutured on to the rest of this large body, nerves and arteries have to be shut down for a while when they reroute things and open new avenues.
They did it sometimes at night and got complaints that people were having trouble finding the bathroom.
So...this must be the first NEW area that a lot of people have moved to. I think that those of us who have lived here for awhile will attest that our power is very dependable and constant.
Don't miss the lightning presentation that the POA is sponsoring. That is a huge issue for a very serious and personal power outage.

I never received a call from SECO and the lack of communication was frustrating. a mass communication via their website or phone system. I listened to WVLG, expecting some information. I called the station, told them I had not located the lost cat but could they tell me about the power issues. The reply was that they couldn't get a reply from SECO. Okay, so call your sister business, the Daily Sun, and have them contact SECO's public information officer.
Has anyone seen and/or heard anything in the newspaper or the radio station about this inconvenience to hundreds of homes?

I think people need to realize that they have come here from areas that have existed for many decades, if not hundreds of years. The infrastructure has been there long enough for the bugs to be worked out. We are moving into a community that is brand new, relatively, and is growing at an unprecedented pace. All the infrastructure contractors are working hard to complete projects so that home building can commence. Unexpected things may happen, but that doesn't mean these providers don't care.
