Just wondering what folks think about Credit Unions around the Villages--I've been in Insight Credit Union and from the yellow pages, it appears there is a Campus C.U. and I believe another one in Leesburg. Up North, people seem to like them because they are usually customer-owned so that's what I am used to. I'm not sure how popular they are in Florida. If someone could give me any info or their thoughts, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

We've belonged to military credit unions for decades because of the customer service, interest bearing checking, free ATMs, no monthly fees, etc. Now we belong to Citizens First Bank. They have everything our credit unions had plus free popcorn, free online bill pay and branches and ATMs throughout TV.

Free popcorn, and sometimes they have apples, and on Halloween they dress up in costumes. It's not important for banking, but it's cute and typical of the Villages experience!

My advice is to stick with a credit union for your major banking - money markets, mortgages, etc. With the internet there is no problem.

I have Navy Federal and USAA. Navy Federal does not sell mortgages originated with them. They maintain the mortgage. Big plus when you need to talk to someone. I understand that these two credit unions are not available to everyone. But you are right about credit unions in general.

For minor banking I would establish a small local bank account - checking, cash, etc. Transferring funds between your credit union and local bank is no problem and no cost.

I plan on establishing an account with BB&T prior to my move in April. BB&T is on 466. This is not an endorsement. Just a statement.

Banking has changed significantly in recent years. Literally, it is only a "click" away.

Go were you get the best service, rates, etc.

Personally, popcorn doesn't impress me.

I was on the board of directors of a cu 25 years and was surprised there were no cu's in the row of financials on 466. I belong to central fl. educators credit union based in Orlando but have a branch in leesburg just north of the airport on 441. I have my mortgage and car loan and they have excellent bill-pay.

One small point...

if you belong to a CU don't let go if possible.

When interest rates go to normal (and that's on the way) they usually offer lightly better rates (CD's) to their subscribers than banks do to their account holders.

I have been a CU member since 1966. I have always found that they had rates that were equal to, if not better than a regular bank.

We belong to a CU in WA state since 1970. We are moving full-time to TV next month. There is a free ATM for our CU just outside of TV. We bank online. We planned to continue to use this CU and no other bank. Is there a reason that I am unaware of that we should join a local bank or CU?

To cash a check from out of state. I don't know about here, but where I was living, many banks wouldn't cash a check unless it's drawn on them or you had an account.
