I'm sure you all have seen the big mushrooms growing just about everywhere. When I was a kid, my father would take my brother and I mushroom picking in the woods around our hometown of Weirton, West Virginia. Sometimes we would get a whole trunk full. In those days, I knew what we picked and could identify them. But today, I have lost anything I ever knew.

I don't want to pick and eat the Villages mushrooms, but I am curious if anybody knows what they are and if they would be edible if they were not so full of bug poison.

My sister taught at Dillonvale High School in about 1959/60 or so. My dad grew up in Connerville before moving to Weirton in the 1920s.

Weirton Steel, once a giant in the industry, remained so until about 1990. It began to size down until today when it employs fewer than a thousand people.

Moderator, I know this reply is not about mushrooms, but I have been reading this forum for quite some time and now I see Weirton mentioned so I have to reply. My name is Nick Paul. I am originally from Weirton, graduated Weir High in 1964. Moved to Nevada after graduating from WVU in 1968, and have been here ever since. We are trying to move to the Villages, but just can't seem to sell our home in Carson City, NV. But as soon as we do, we are on our way. So is there a Weirton club there yet? Thanks...

Hi Nick.

I graduated from Weir High in 1965. Went to Madonna for three years then Weir High for my senior year because of the televison broadcast course. In any event, there is no Weirton Club, but I have met about 8 or 9 people from Weirton.

Each year for the past 3 years, my wife and I have gone down to Orlando for a Florida gathering of Weir High graduates. It's a weekend gathering at Westlake Estates Resort. Kinda fun.

I seem to remember your name, Nick Paul.

Talk Host, you tag line doesn't give your name. I lived on Weirton Heights, not far from Madonna HS and played softball with a bunch of Madonna guys, like Tony (Nootch) Maranacci, his cousin Bobby Orlando, and a few others. When does the reunion in Orlando usually happen? Maybe a good reason to make another trip back toward TV. Thanks.

Tony maranacci was a classmate of mine. I'm not sure about Orlando. We used to smoke in David Cantini's driveway. I'll send you a PM

Talk Host, got your PM, but for some reason I cannot use the PM function in this forum. My verification code to send is blocked. So I am using this subject till I can figure out how to PM. Do you happen to have a date for that Orlando gathering? Thanks.

No, I do not know the date of the gathering. It is usually in the fall or winter.

DO NOT EAT THE MUSHROOMS! I think these are of the genus Amanita. And many species in this genus are really bad news for you. The classic toadstool Amanita Muscaria is in among this genus. For reference
