I get all the sounds from email notifications and games.
However there is no sound from playing video clips/youtube.

Was working fine and now not.

I have checked the mute and the connections to the monitor and computer.
When I pull the sound plug from the computer or from the monitor I can hear an electrical sound.

Suggestions?

Windows? iMac?

Most of your "on board" files will play with email and games but utubes and and video clips require a software that may need upgrading. If your system is producing sound then there is nothing wrong with the hardware.
Check to see if you have the latest upgrades for your sound card and media player.
Start by looking in your system control and right click any media players.

btkI have the same exact problem where it's only YouTube videos as far as I know of that I can't get the sound. It's happening to all 3 of my browsers; MSIE, Chrome and Firefox. I've tried doing the Google thing to see if I could find a solution. Tried a few suggestions found, but no dice. Other suggestions almost require a PhD in Computer Science. I have a suspicion that Windows Updates has caused the problem, but I really don't have much of a clue. Double help... one for me; one for BTK!

after the suggestions above which showed all drivers up to date I did some google searches.

The following worked:

Open up you tube to a video and start to play one. Then pause the video...you should see the speaker icon at the lower left. Next to it will be a red slider for volume....drag it to the max....restart the video. I have Windoes 7 and this did the trick for my lost sound.

btkThanks for sharing. It worked for me too! BTW, when I opened Youtube like you instructed, the following video came up automatically. I wonder if you can have up to two of these in TV? :D
