Has anybody heard what's happened to Jammie Stevens Construction Company. We started a project with him 2 months ago and he has been a no show for the last 4 weeks. Phone calls and emails have not been answered or ignored. Thinking about going to Senior vs Crime for some advice.

Don't think about....just do it regarding contacting Seniors Againest Crime. You wouldn't believe it...but this kind of thing does happen here. Folks NEED to do their homework, NOT pay in advance and get references!

Just wondering if the Op has gotten any satisfaction?

Yes, The Seniors Against Crime were very helpful. We started a complaint, and have had results. Work is now being done.

Did they say what their problem was? I heard that they do nice work for a good price. So we had thought about getting a quote from them, until seeing your post.

I'd like to know also. What reason could there be for a business not returning emails or phone calls for 4 weeks!

There was a thread on this site some time ago. I'd heard that he was NOT reliable and because of some "issues" late last year or early this year, his license had been revoked. Check the sources on here, Seniors Againest Crime and the BBB before hiring anyone AND do NOT pay $$$$ up front!

I feel that I must address this post. First of all, you can check any contractor's license at this web site: https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp
As Jammie is currently working on a project for us, I did verify that he does have a current license (expires in 8/2014). It would be a good thing to check on this before posting.
Now, let me address Jammie's work for us. As others have stated, he does very nice work for a very reasonable price. That being said, he has been working on our new sun room, lanai and birdcage for 6 months. We have a lot of down time where we don't see him for a week or two. He does not answer phone messages. Occasionaly, he will respond to an email. BUT, even though he does not reply, he does listen to what I'm telling him and he eventually will show up and work on the next step of the job and address any concerns. Is this acceptable way to do business? - no. But that is how he seems to operate.
I think his problem is that he is a bad business manager. He has too many projects going at one time and is trying to balance them all and as a result, no one is happy.
This is the second project that he has done for us. The first one (a birdcage - a much smaller job) we had no problems with and it was done in a timely fashion. Our friends recommended him as he did a birdcage for them. So, when we decided to change our lanai into a sun room, our birdcage into a lanai and add another birdcage, we just called him again.
If you asked me would I recommend him - - - I would tell you he does nice work. Also, all of the subcontractors have done a great job. If you want the job done quickly . . . . you probably should get someone else.
I really do not believe that Jammie should be reported to "Seniors Against Crime". His only crime is that he doesn't know how to manage his jobs. And I must admit, although my contract had an agreed to start date (that he did make), we neglected to put in a completion date. When he told me 4 months total, I just believed it. That is an error I will not make again.

After 4 weeks of having a contractor being a "no show" and the contractor not returning calls I would be alarmed....

Not to be confused with Jamies Landscaping! Jamie does great work & would hate to see his rep tarnished!

This post is a follow-up to Post #9 which I wrote on 10/29/13. I was trying to defend Jammie (at least as not being criminal, but definitely being a bad manager). At that time, he was working, although very slowly, on our lanai/sunroom project. Since that time, here is what has happened. Our project never got completed. Jammie stopped showing up around November. Everything was completed except for the windows for the sun room. It took awhile to realize that he wasn't really ever going to finish, as he periodically would send an email saying he was coming over, but then he never showed up.
We were so disappointed. After delving into this further, here is what I found out. First of all, I had checked on his license on the Florida state web site. It says that he IS licensed. So, I called the Sumter County Building Department and they told me that Jammie is no longer allowed to work in Sumter County. When I asked how I would know this, since the Florida web site still shows that he has a valid license, they just told me that Sumter County has filed complaints against him and has forwarded this to the state, but until the state actually acts on these complaints, it will show that he has a license. Also, when we took the permit off of our house (as I wanted to "rebag" it as the original bag was torn), I saw that the name of the contractor on the permit was NOT Jammie Stevens Construction, but a company by the name of "Highly Recommended Builder" (George Atkins) who I found out is Jammie's brother-in-law. We have been in touch with George.
So - my recommendation is to not only check the validity of a license through the web site, but to also contact the Sumter County Building Department and ask them.
As I mentioned in my original post, Jammie had done work for us a few years ago and we had no problems. He also did work for some of our friends, so we were definitely surprised that this second job turned out like this.
