View Full Version : PETCO should be ashamed!

We thought we had a moth infestation in our laundry room for the last month so we have been spraying and cleaning like crazy. Our dog's water dish and food bowls are there. We buy dogfood in 35lb bags. On Saturday when we went to scoop a bowlful out of the bag my husband said the moths got into the bag so he sealed it up and went to Petco to buy a new bag of PURINA PRO PLAN. He gets home and opens new bag and it's loaded with larvae and moths. He takes both bags back and explains. The manager said about 25% have been returned! Well, DUH, don't sell it! I'm heartbroken to think my pet ate it but thankful she shows no sign of illness. Petco should be ashamed.

We run into that with horse feed sometimes. Its difficult to get rid of, but I don't think you can blame anybody but mother nature.

Years ago, I had that happen with a bag of bird seed after I opened it and stored it in a closet. I didn't blame the store I bought it from. I just learned how to store it better.

Why not give Purina a call and let them know what happened. Contamination could have occurred anywhere along the way to the store.

When we lived in North Carolina my daughter brought dog food to our house while we watched her dogs. Lo and behold we got those moths! The bug guy came out and brought these sticky traps and put them all over the house. I could NOT believe how these moths went all over my house! It was disgusting. Took several months.

You are right ... I agree that Petco should be ashamed for selling a dogfood that they know is contaminated. If 25% have been returned, there are probably many more buyers who haven't realized there is a problem, or people that discarded it rather than returning it! :ohdear:

Your first mistake was buy dog food made by Purina.

a few years ago we had a moth problem once and I emptied all of the cupboards, sprayed them and then washed them down real well to no avail. I looked at everything I took out of the cupboard and did not find the moths, but I was looking for moths not eggs and larvae. My old dog was about 15 1/2 when he died and I had a big bag of doggy cookies left so I took them over to the neighbor for her dog and a few days later she mentioned that she had moths in her house. I felt bad but at least we found the source of the moths.

We had the same thing in a bag of Purina One cat food. Noticed it as soon as I opened the bag. (luckily we keep it in the garage). Threw it away, went to Petco a few days later, they said I should have brought it in they would have reimbursed. Lesson learned.

I have had moths come out of wild bird food a few times. To take care of it, I have scooped the bird food into bowls and microwaved it for about a minute. No more larva, no more moths, and plenty of happy birds. Wild bird seed actually smells pretty good when it is in the microwave.

This also happens with Flour!!!Bug infestations in flour is a common thing. Professionals recommend that you "Freeze" the flour for at least 48 hrs to kill the eggs and weevils, and then seal in air tight container or bag. You can keep in fridge also. Don't put open flour bag in fridge without being sealed. (It will get damp) Not trying to change thread, just point of information. Have a nice day!!!!!

If they show up in your house, these are the best (IMHO) Pantry Moth traps.

Your first mistake was buy dog food made by Purina.

Purina Pro Plan was recommended by the breeder and he is the president of the National Collie Club and a presiding collie show judge. I think he knows his dog food.

We've checked all our food and none have shown up. Thankfully I keep sugar, flour etc in locked mason jars anyway. I will notify Purina. I know it can happen but it just got me so mad that Petco knew there was a problem and continues to sell it and infesting people's homes and animals.

this can be a common problem; just put the dog food in your freezer and the larvae will die. eating the larva or insects will not harm your pets. do not blame petco. larval contamination is common.

They (unbiased reviewers of dog food) list all Purina pro plan food as a 1 star out of a possible 6 stars and give you the reasons why. It's very possible your breeder gets a kickback to recommend the Purina brand and they are a big multi national corporation (Nestle) so they can afford to do so.

Do you want to feed your dog "The main meat ingredient in this food is in fact poultry by-product meal. It is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually products that are of such low quality as to be rejected for use in the human food chain, or else are those parts that have so little value that they cannot be used elsewhere in either the human or pet food industries." ??

"The AAFCO definition of poultry by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered poultry, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.” Unable to be identified even by species or source, it is a very low quality ingredient."

Corn gluten meal, "animal" fat and "poultry" by product, not good for dogs.

Look on the site for some good human grade foods like orijen, evo, TOTW etc.

Even Earthborn Holistic brand is 3 star. Both Earthborne and Orijen are available at Sparrs near brownwood.

Sorry, but if it says Purina, I will not feed it to my dog. Just my opinion.

It's a good thing to go on an independent site for a review of dog food ingredients. (Not the Blue Buffalo site).

A few years ago, we reviewed all the dogfoods, and decided that Orijen and Taste of the Wild were the best dogfoods. (Arcana is manufactured by Orijen). However the information probably changes every few years as new products are introduced. We should probably take another look.

We got moths from buying bird seed loose from our bird's breeder's store. Now I freeze all seed for a couple of days before opening it. If you see any stringy-type things in your pet food, it's probably the moth larvae.

I agree Purina is not the best food to feed. Lots of fillers that pass through without providing nutrition. Check this out. Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor (http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/)

I feed my dogs Blue Buffalo dog food and store it in an air-tight container called Vittles Vault. I also use the human version of Vittles Vault for my breakfast cereal. No pest problems.
