Xfinity/Comcast Backup

Xfinity/Comcast offered free backup of computers. For the last several years, I took advantage of this for my personal computer. I received notification that this service will be discontinued.

I am looking for any suggestions for backup solutions. Once again, this is my personal computer, so backup does not have to be heavy duty...

My suggestion is an external USB hard drive and backup software that will come with it.

Just make sure the external drive is at least as large as the internal drive.

I have my software set to do a full backup monthly, file backup weekly and continous backup of new/revised files.

Best Buy's Geek Squad can get you what you need, and since the drive is external you can store it away from the computer (if you don't to continuous backup).

I believe the whole thing is under $100.

What you were using was cloud storage which is available from other sources but for a fee I agree with the poster that USB is easier.

I do not back up my whole computer as it requires a large external drive if I want to back up everything. I back up my important files on a series of USB thumb drives that I have labeled. Ie Tax files - finance files- Insurance and personal - More than enough space and I can keep them all on a key chain. I include a file with the download info for the apps and games I have purchased so they can be reinstalled if need be instead of backing them up. I also have a 64 gig USB that I have downloaded the digital version of the movies I have bought. This way I can view vital files on my tablet when traveling which doesn't have a lot of memory without loading them on and if a virus attacks my computer all is on the thumb drives. (most tablets using Microsoft 8 have a USB port)

My History Lesson over so many years, 1969 working with computers, personal and mainframe, is that i DO NOT WANT ANYONE other than my self to back up personal files. Keep Comcast / Infinity out of your computer, you need to be in control of your files. So many ways to do that.
Go to your computer club and get the know how.

Okay... here's my two cents worth. Hard drive back-ups in your home are awesome and everyone should have one (or more)! But, if someone breaks into your house and steals your hard drives or you have a fire, flood, etc., (a long shot I know) your information is lost, lost, lost! No, I don't think you should store personal information "account numbers, passwords, sign-ons" anything like that on the cloud. But, if you are like me and have over 100 gig of photographs, then backing them up on the cloud is vital! I could emotionally lose any personal possession except for my pictures! So, $50 per year is totally worth it to me to back-up certain things. I keep all personal information on the external hard drive and back-up my main computer to the cloud. I personally use Backblaze for my Macs, but if I had a PC I would use Carbonite. The other option would be to use external back-ups and store one at another location. But, then you have to constantly change them out every few weeks. I tried that... I'm too lazy for that. Anyways... I guess what it comes down to is what you are storing and whether you can afford to lose it and how much time you want to spend backing up. Please don't beat me up for this opinion. It has worked for me, and I have NEVER had any problems with Backblaze. As a matter of fact, when running an update on my computer a couple of weeks ago, I lost three months worth of pictures... no problem...Backblaze got them back for me!
