Being an engineer, I feel compelled to face facts, but when a friend passes away, as one did this morning, I feel guilty when I unfriend them. I do it because it is the logical thing to do. I also remove them from my email address book and cell phone. Just wondering how others handle this situation.

Hmmmm. Sticky issue. I usually keep them for awhile until things settle down some, then take them off my stuff. Well, except for Mom. She'll probably always stay on my contact lists.

If they were good friends, I don't delete them off my FaceBook. I have had their family members post pictures of the deceased with several of us in them having a good time. Some of us as friends will post some pictures we have taken throughout the years. Makes for some good memories.

I agree with this. Very often a facebook page is kept as a memorial of sorts.

Exactly.. It is a great memorial page.. It also gives me comfort to revisit their page and remember the good times..

We have experienced a lot of deaths in the last 5 years of family members and three of my close girlfriends. All of them are still on my FB page, address book and cell phone with their picture attached to name.

As others have said I rather enjoy being able to visit their FB page and review messages we sent back & forth and their pictures also. Sometimes when I'm scrolling through my cell phone numbers and see pictures of my deceased friends it always brings a smile to my face. I also have a few voice mail messages that I never deleted. Somehow being able to do this helps me feel their presence.

Lost a long-time, close friend and co-worker 10 months ago. Her FB page is still up, maintained by her sisters and is a place for those that miss her to post thoughts, poems and pictures that help us all to adjust to our loss.

Never gave a thought to unfriending her. I suppose it will happen someday.

Similarly......

I still have in my in-box their last email sent to me from several special friends that have passed away, one as long as 7 years ago. Those emails have moved right along with several computer upgrades.

I read them less frequently as time passes but I swear I can hear their voices when I do.

Again I suppose someday I will delete them.

They bring me some comfort and are not taking up too much space  so they have remained.

I too am sorry for your loss. I have a good friend who died unexpectedly from a brain tumor three years ago. Prior to that, he had gone to a Saab driving school, and they had made a video of him talking and driving. I still have that on my computer. I don't view it very often because his loss still hurts, but I do go there every once in a while just to hear his voice and see his face.

But I also understand your actions. when our beloved dog died in 2007, I ran through the house gathering up all his stuff, and threw it out. The things were too painful to look at.

I think there is no wrong answer to this. It's very personal.

I have quite a few friends and relatives that have passed away and their pages are still intact on facebook. As Bonny says, we post pictures and stories about them especially on the anniversary of their deaths or on their birthdays and it brings back some fond memories. I also find it very helpful as a part of the grieving process.

There again, another childhood girlfriend passed away suddenly and her family immediately deleted her page and it hurts me so much that I can't see things that we interacted about. Apparently it was very hard for them to continue seeing her page.
