You are a good person Borjo. But there are some with dyslexia and some that are good spellers. Some are athletes and some are not. Some are smarter than others and some are kinder than others and some people have everybody fooled and some people have nobody fooled.

A reader may find it difficult to follow the train of thought of a writer if he encounters more than a couple of obvious typographical spelling errors. Spelling errors are distracting and hijack a reader's focusing on content. Furthermore, spelling errors tend to reduce a reader's opinion of the writer's intellect.
As a related observation, some posts are so replete with grammatical errors that a reader may simply give up on trying to understand what the poster is attempting to present.
I have an old friend who used to complain about all the "errors" in emails she received from old friends. After discussions she finally realized it was nicer to receive the contact from old friends than it was to criticize the correspondence.
Personally, I can figure out what someone is trying to say and would not want them to stop writing.

I like the fact that people feel free to express their opinions without worrying about spelling and grammar. We need fresh viewpoints. Some new posters may not realize there is a "preview post" button located at the bottom beside "submit reply". Also, there is an edit function. If you post and then notice a spelling mistake, you're able to edit your own post.
P.S. By the way, in Canada, neighbor is spelled neighbour, honor is spelled honour, etc. Perhaps it's the same with Brits. My iPad is always trying to correct me.

I always wonder if those that can't spell, really care about their shortcomings
and I am sure they make up for it in other areas. Perhaps, they are all erudite in math or chemistry, areas where some of us are far less adept. Maybe they think we, who are less adroit in math, as being nothing short of dunces!
To some, my grammar and punctuation may not be quite up to standard. But, to me it doesn't bother me in the least.

Spelling is not a sign of how smart you are. A lot of people who were very smart couldn't spell for crap. Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison and Winston Churchill to name a few.
I only see the first two and last two letters of most words it doesn't mean I am stupid, it does mean I can't spell worth crap. I would spell if I could. So if it bothers you just block my posts it is an option on the site.

Reading does contribute to excellence in spelling. I do believe that.
Our babies were read to from about nine months old......
I, myself, loved to read.... as did my mom. Just passed on the habit.
They were taken to the library very often to select their own books as little tykes. The bookstores were our favorite places to hang out, looking at all the new books, before buying. They now do the same with their own broods.
They all became excellent spellers.......it just comes naturally if one reads.
Also, in elementary school, back in the cave man days, we were taught phonics (which I also taught to my two children from pre school on)......whereas my husband was not taught phonics in his Catholic school, nor did his mom read to him or take him to the library.
He has evolved into a good speller over the years......mostly from reading more and also from building his own website.....in general, computers have aided the poor spellers, especially with spellcheck (which I never use, but he does)........
I've always bought him books as gifts, during our long marriage.......
However, since the introduction of the KINDLE, which we both love, he reads voraciously........and again, the spelling does improve the more one reads.
Now, in all fairness to the not so great spellers out there.......sometimes when one is typing very quickly on their keyboards.....a spelling error can occur......even with the best of the best spellers.
To me, it's always the thought that counts. I can read between the lines and figure out what is meant.......even if it is misspelled.
Similar to how a mother understands what her baby is saying, even if no one else does. If a mother didn't respond verbally back to the baby, acknowledging their "message" no matter how babyish the language heard, the child would never learn to speak.........or might even have delayed speech. Ours spoke very early and comprehended language.
They also read very early......way before school began. All from being read to. It just comes naturally.

We had a neighbor years ago, whose young daughter was diagnosed as dyslexic in elementary school after years of struggling with reading and spelling. She was aided by a very patient teacher, one on one.
This young girl had a "heart of gold" and would hang Mayday Baskets on the doorknobs of all the elderly people in her neighborhood and do other kind deeds for everyone........she ended up attending college very successfully.
I believe I was told that she saw the words "upside down".......

You probably know that I won the Red Pen of America Contest for many years. But then...when Peter Jennings said "snuck" after we stayed up all night together watching shock and awe, I began to fundamentally question the plausibility of my quest to rid the world of error.
The very word reminds me of what was once an ironical, common mistake....of course you know that the word "err" was once only correctly pronounced "ur" and never "air"?
And remember that horrible year when "collectables" with an "a" was added to the dictionary? It's pathetic; it's an outrage; to what is the world coming? What to do?
Trust me, friends of the Red Pen, when you cannot rely on the Oxford English Dictionary to hold a line, you are alone in the world.

I remember I had a friend Tom in the Philosophy Department at the University of Nevada, Reno who always seemed to have many girls interested in him. He would take love letters from them, correct their spelling and grammar, and give them back to them. This trick often resulted in his having one less woman interested in him.

I do know that as you are typing along sometimes you don't realize that you are using the incorrect version of the words their, there, too or to. I happens to me. I think my brain is functioning to fast to realize the difference. Once it is posted and I read it again it sinks in and I think now why did I do that when I know perfectly well how to use the word? and I edit the post and fix it. One thing I had to mention is on the show Judge Judy this week a litigant came up with a new word "tooken". She kept saying it over and over and Judge Judy stopped her and said there is no such word as tooken. It was a funny moment.

Wait just a minute! I was an editor, and I say "snuck." Even Merriam-Webster doesn’t make the distinction in its online definition and fully recognizes “snuck” as a past tense and past participle of “sneak."
The rules of the English language constantly evolve with usage, and I believe that's as it should be. Otherwise we would still be saying thee and thy. Although I do object to The Ox adding the insipid Rachael Ray's EVOO to the dictionary.
Peter Jennings... I'm happy to be lumped with him as one of the "snuckers.":clap2:

OP you are pushing the envelope regarding spelling on this website. That's okay---you have a right to your pet peeve same as the rest of us.
I could say a lot about "spelling" (I'll put my better half up against anyone) but I will only make one quick comment. There is a huge difference between writing a piece to communicate your ideas or opinions on a website such as TOTV and being concerned about editing your thesis.
As one of my favorite college professors said----"I don't care so much about your spelling but I do care about what you have to say". Finally, these darn computers sometimes change my words into the wrong words. Dam! Ooops I meant darn.

Very true. A few years back, a Masters candidate let me read a paper she was writing, to see what I thought of it. I went ahead and corrected all of the spelling mistakes and gramatical errors that I found and handed it back to her.
She looked at the edited article and said "I can't submit that". When I asked why, she said "because they know I can't spell worth a damn and they will know someone helped me and I will get an F"
She submitted the article as is and got a B+. Obviously, she was marked on content and knowledge of the subject, not on her penmanship!
Last I heard, she was working on her PHD. Inability to spell in no way should infer stupidity. We are what we are, no one need be perfect at everything.

I'm not perfect and make mistakes. I volunteer with adults that can't read and write. Yes, they are all around us. Someone types a word that may not be spelled correctly or uses a work incorrectly can happen to all of us. Judgmental comes to mind, but so does freedom of speech. I will not judge and will give everyone the ability to speak their mind.

Murray you are a wise person. At one time I worked in the Ph.d program of a large University and you would not believe the spelling and grammar mistakes the candidates made. They were exceptionally bright but were more interested in content and less interested in form.
Personally I think it's anal to pick apart a note for mistakes. That's why God made editors.

A reader may find it difficult to follow the train of thought of a writer if he encounters more than a couple of obvious typographical spelling errors. Spelling errors are distracting and hijack a reader's focusing on content. Furthermore, spelling errors tend to reduce a reader's opinion of the writer's intellect.
As a related observation, some posts are so replete with grammatical errors that a reader may simply give up on trying to understand what the poster is attempting to present.
I have to agree with the original poster.
So the attitude is now that we're older we're not supposed to care?

Did he really get "jumped on", or did other members just post their opinions? I think that since it's a chat site, everyone should feel free to say whatever they think, as long as they're not criticizing the OP. If people start personally attacking the OP, rather than just disagreeing with his comments, the Moderators are quick to delete their posts and give them a warning. And if it continues, the Mods are really good about stepping in and closing the thread.
In this case, I think most people were just goofing around and having fun with the topic.

As I age I find myself both smarter and dumber in many ways. Many years ago when I got my Masters I was very puffed up with myself because I was told that they were going to use this 100+ page thesis of mine in the library as a reference for other students. I was filled with my own worth and perfection until I went to look at it in its published form in the library and saw that I had written CONCLISION instead of Conclusion at the end. I was so mortified!! There was no way to get it off the shelf at that point. It just proved my humanity to me and taught me some humility. I learned not to judge, lest I be judged. I know the difference between there, they're, their, your, you're, etc. But I still occasionally use them incorrectly when typing. I proofread before posting, but often miss typos in things I've written. It's easier to see mistakes in what someone else has written. For instance, the "i" in your last sentence.

I think they are both correct. Sometimes you choose one word over another due to the flavor of the sentence--how you want to sound, what words you've already used, etc. For instance, in a paragraph where you have already used "also," using "too" makes for better reading.

I must admit that I am bothered by grammatical errors in posts. But, I
was an English major in college and had grammar drummed into me daily
in grammar school by the nuns, lol. Those two facts might explain my being bothered.
But, then I think that the people who make grammatical errors should not
be judged. They could be the nicest people you could ever meet and they
might be the most helpful people you could ever meet. And I would be very appreciative if I were in need and they helped me.
However, what really bothers me is grammatical errors while speaking.
For instance, I am bothered by people who say "He don't." Do they
ever say "He do not?" I do not understand why they don't understand
that don't is a contraction of "do not."
I also am bothered by people who say "I seen." I have seen is the
correct way to use "seen" or else simply say "I saw."
I try to not let it bother me but sometimes it is hard.
I do not mean to be a snob but I really think that people who
have graduated from high school should know when to say
"don't" and when to use the word "seen."
