How Do You Beat the Heat?

We loved our LSV which was early October. Our one concern though is the heat in the summertime. Weather was lovely while we were there. I am curious if you had trouble adjusting to the heat?

I took a quick peek at the average temperature and was surprised that it was so much lower than I thought it would be. I mean where I live it can get super hot:

How often during the year do you feel it is super hot there?

These may be averages, but I can tell you from May thru early October it is in the 90's each day with unbearable humidity. It's not the heat it is the humidity. When you walk outside it just slaps you in the face and you live with it for almost 6 months. Now the other 6 months are beautiful - so you take the good with the bad. Don't know you ever get use to the heat, you learn to work around it. Like staying inside - a lot.

We moved from Texas, anything under 103 is cool. :1rotfl: it all depends on what you are accustomed to.

You can't beat the heat. That's why 30% of the Villagers are "snowbirds".

I hate the heat, however.....we were here in June, July and August and the heat was very tolerable. Yes it's hot but there was always a nice breeze. Always cooler in the shade! I just didn't do outside things in the hot part of the day 11 AM to 3pm. Don't let the heat prevent you from choosing this wonderful lifestyle in The Villages.

We get a real early in the day try to go to a movie in the midafternoon the squares at night just don't schedule anything other than pool activities from 11 to about four

I'm from Chicago. I'll take the summer heat over our Chicago winters.

I'm not sure The Villages has the same temps as Orlando (it may be hotter here). In any event, it is pretty tough to beat the heat. We do outside things in the morning, and lay low in the air conditioning in the afternoons.

You get used to it....

I'm a native Chicagoan. You never get USED to the cold- you get smart. You learn the best way to function.

Same here. You work around the weather. If you don't have to go to work, you will often have the luxury of adapting your schedule to the weather. Cool, beautiful early mornings, comfortable evenings to be out and about…. and gorgeous sunsets!

If you are familiar with all the things residents may choose to do on campus, you will know there is more to do here (indoors) than anywhere else I can think of.
We have been here almost 3 years now. This past August in The Villages was the first truly hot, humid month WE have experienced. Kind of like the 'dog days' in a Chicago August, EXCEPT there was almost always a breeze, even if it was a warm one. Comparatively, it's VERY do-able, unless you have special medical issues to consider.

I take more pause with the lightning and heavy rain we can experience here in hurricane season. THAT keeps me at home. Here we are usually on the fringes of any big storms- they don't last long, then the sun comes out again. (and again, we work around the rains.)

We have great landscape drainage engineering here- we don't navigate flooded streets afterwards. (like in Chicago)

Central Florida is, however, the lightening capitol of the US. It's serious stuff.
We learn to pay attention…. and adjust any outdoor activity accordingly... but we love it here. :)

In the cold north, you bundle up, in the heat, you can only take off so many clothes b4 you are arrested!:loco::loco:

If you are an early riser, plan to do things then or in the evening.

You can always go a pool in the afternoon or catch a movie, or just stay indoors. :smiley:

I do not find the heat to be overbearing unless you are planning to exercise outdoors. The best thing is, "you don't have to shovel sunshine". The last winter was enough for me with Sandy and three feet of snow.

I would have a bottle of water with me, to prevent dehydration.

Were it not for 6 mos of oppressive heat and humidity ..... pterodactyl sized mosquitoes and cockroaches big enough to saddle ..... Fla would be as over populated as Cal.

I love it! My 3 fav seasons are: early summer, summer & late summer.

and I didn't even mention ..... snakes, gators, sinkholes or hurricanes.

It doesn't get "hot" in TV low 90's is warm but not hot. Humidity is no worse than in many other areas. I think the weather is very tolerable here.

We live here year round and I wondered how we were going to tolerate the heat. At first, it was a bit tough but after the first summer here we got used to it. (This is only our second year here). Now, I prefer the summers. We have a pool so a lot of time is spent there. The house is air conditioned, the stores are air conditioned. You get out in the morning and get your errands done and after 11:00 or so you spend time in the pool or the air conditioning. We got used to the heat and played golf or what ever activity we wanted in the heat of the day. Everyone is different, so do what works for you. Sometimes, I would just do things inside if the heat was too much. Your body will tell you what to do.

Sorry to tell you this but after 16 yrs. (in Tampa) I haven't ever
gotten used to Summer here.

I think many people's initial experience with Florida is a trip in the wintertime when it's a brisk -20 in Syracuse, NY and lovely in Florida. They then form their opinion about how pleasant the year-round weather is based on that experience. If you're thinking of living here year-round, it would be good for you to come back in the middle of summer and experience a week BEFORE you buy into TV. You may come to a completely different decision. We find the summer heat here absolutely intolerable. To us, June, July & August around here is the mirror opposite of January, February & March in Nome, Alaska. So we do the same thing that you'd do in Nome. Close the doors but instead of turning on the heat we turn on the AC and stay inside as much as possible. Others find the heat bearable, and some even find it enjoyable, but not for us.

We are from New Hampshire and just went through our first summer this year. We loved it! No crowds, no lines, and quiet and peace filled our days. We did 7 AM walking or pickle ball, Water aerobics at 9:30 AM, lunch at noon, and swimming and socializing at the pool in the afternoon. We ate dinner out anywhere we pleased without a reservation. Of course this has been our experience. You may not like this low key lifestyle. If everyone agreed with us and stayed here over the summer it wouldn't be idyllic anymore.
