I saw her on the today show and she had bandages on her head from falling the day before. I thought what a strong lady she is and so adamant about continuing her racing in the marathon. RIP, sweetheart, you died doing what you love to do. It should happen to all of us.

Not acquainted with her, but anyone who runs a marathon, at 86, has my total respect!!! Actually, anyone who runs a marathon, at any age, has my respect.

My husband was a boat captain in the Caribbean. He had a tourist group aboard one day, and they all went snorkeling. One late 80's gentleman put on his snorkel gear and floated off the back of the boat.........well....you probably know the rest of the story. He did NOT float back. All proper procedure was followed, and the new widow was the most gracious person on Earth. She asked that all others aboard have a drink in honor of her DH and not let the day be ruined....and so it was!

I don't know her but I think if she had taken better care of herself she might have added another 10, 15, or 20 years to her life. Running marathons, especially at her age, is not the way to extend healthy years to your life. It was a foolish thing to do, in my opinion. Sorry, I have no respect for dumb behavior.

I agree with you on one level, VPL, but on another level I don't... at some point in time you might make the decision that life is better lived doing what you're passionate about and taking your chances. I think at age 86 that's what she was doing. It's her life; her decision.

I agree that it's her life and her decision, but I just think it was a poor decision.
