View Full Version : BEWARE of The Tire Choice at Colony

My grandmother (a Village Resident) went to The Tire Choice to get her spare tire patched as there was a nail in her tire. She took her car to The Tire Choice at Colony and was told that she needed all new tires (her tires were less than 2 years old, and she drives less than 3,000 miles a year. She is not a snow bird and resides in The Villages full time). She was told that her tires were unsafe to drive on, and that her rear brakes were also bad and needed to be replaced. The Tire Choice took it upon themselves to change her oil (she had no idea they were doing that), and charged her $44.99 for an oil change. Her final bill was over $1300. My grandmother gets her car serviced every year at the same place, not The Tire Choice, and 3 months ago had her oil changed (they put a new sticker in her window), and her car checked as part of her tune-up. Her brakes were at 75% (her pads and rotors were practically brand new), her tires were rated for 50,000 miles and had less than 6,000 miles on them, and her car was in great shape. The Tire Choice at Colony took advantage of my grandmother, and I have filed a report with the BBB about this and plan on reporting them to the police as well. According to the BBB, The Tire Choice has several complaints similar to this, and each one states that the sales people tell the customer things like "the car isn't safe to drive on those tires," or "we can't guarantee you won't break down as soon as you leave here," and other scare tactics to up their sales and prey on the elderly and those who are not "car savvy." I spoke to them about all of this and they had numerous stories, none of which remained the same in my several conversations with them, and they went so far as to say that my grandmother personally requested all of the work because she was driving her grand kids around that weekend. I am the only grand kid within a 100 mile radius and I am 34 with my own car. The Tire Choice will not provide any refund, and is unwilling to make any of their wrongs right. To make matters worse, my grandmothers spare tire in the trunk, the one she went in to have patched, is still in the trunk, and the nail is still in it. She went in for a tire to be plugged, left with a bill of over $1300, and a flat spare tire!

Update: 11/12/13:
I was contacted yesterday by the Regional Manager asking if we could resolve this. I told him that was and is of course my intent. He asked me to send him receipts from our regular mechanic for when my grandmothers tires were purchased, when her brakes were last inspected, and any other receipts showing her regular tune-ups and maintenance. I told Alan Jenkins, the Regional Manager, that it would take me a couple of days to obtain all of this, as I work in Lake Mary and live in the Villages, but as soon as I had what he requested, I would fax it to him. At 11:11 am this morning, he called and asked if I had the receipts yet. I told him that I needed a few days, just like I told him the day before, and when I had them I would fax them to him. Mr. Jenkins then asked that I take this post down while this matter is being discussed between he and I. I told him no, and that my reasoning is due to the number of complaints on the BBB website regarding this type of matter, and because as of right now, nothing has been resolved. Mr. Jenkins then threatened me by telling me that if I do not remove this post, he will not work with me at all to resolve this matter.

Today is the first time I have revisited this post, and am glad that so many people have read it, and responded. Many of the responses are of similar situations regarding The Tire Choice Total Car Care and how they make their customer feel as if their car (or golf cart) is unsafe to drive unless they perform unnecessary work. After they use these scare tactics, they get the customer to sign, authorizing the work to be done (being scared into signing for work is just as bad as being blackmailed into doing it), thus covering themselves from possible litigation...so they think! When I get work done by my mechanic, he calls me, tells me what is wrong with my car, asks me if I want the work to be done, and if I do, he does it, if I don't, he doesn't do it, and tells me how long he believes it will take for whatever it is that I refused to have fixed to finally give way. At no point do I sign an "Agreement" to do the work. This is how mechanics should operate, and people should be made aware that if a company needs you to sign an "Agreement," you should be skeptical. Of course there are exceptions to this, but not by any mechanic I have ever dealt with.

Report this as elder abuse. As you noted, this is not the first time Tire Choice has used the "upsell method" to get $$$$$ out of unsuspecting older people.

There is at least one other Thread documenting this same unethical behavior. So sorry this has happen to your grandmother.

Please post again once you get through the complaint process. It will be interesting to see what pressure from the police, BBB, and seniors vs. crime (if you haven't spoken with them you should) can accomplish. Sadly I suspect that grandma signed a work order and it will be their "expert" opinion that the work was needed. I'll bet the tires are long gone, but if not worth recovering as evidence. Lastly, small comfort, the less than 2 year old tires likely had a replacement warranty and Tire Choice should be helping you with getting money back from the manufacturer of the tires.

Last week I took my 1 year old car to Walmart on CR466 to have a tire checked out that had a slow leak. They patched the tire for $10.

as a single parent whenever I had work done that was a familiar scare tactic....the brakes, the tires...of course I wanted my child safe. I used to joke that they started planning their vacations when they saw me coming.

Just a thought, but if she put it on her credit card, she should call the credit card company and tell them what happened to her (or you could) and tell them that she is refusing to pay the charge and will they help her. It's my understanding that some companies will help the elderly in cases like this - and it's definitely worth the effort. That's horrible - We appreciate your alerting us to this company. Let's put them out of business.

I went to the Tire Choice on 466 near Walmart a couple of years ago for a $10 oil change and they tried to sell about $600 in other "essential" repairs. I said no thanks and left with just the oil change.

This summer I went to the Tire Choice in Colony for the $10 oil change and they tried to scare me into replacing all my tires. I left with just the oil change. By the way, the other essential repairs apparently fixed themselves because this Tire Choice said everything else was fine.

So I know this place will try to upcharge but hard to believe they would actually do the work without authorization.

They are really a shady outfit -- tried to sell us $1400 in air conditioner repairs -- we said no and then realized that they had removed a valve -- we returned and demanded satisfaction and reported them -- they put the valve back in and the air conditioner worked just fine == I heard that they are being asked to leave the villages

Went to Tire City on 466 2 yrs. ago with a nail in my tire; they said I NEEDED $750.00 + in maintenance work done on my car, which I did NOT NEED.
3 friends of mine told me about Sumter tire & I have been going there since. Very honest & knowledgeable people!

I went to another Tire Choice in a different location to have tires rotated and noticed they had my hood up on the car. I asked why open my hood to rotate tires and they said they have it open to give me their free inspection. I said I didn't authorize them to pull parts out of my car to inspect them. Of course they wanted to change air filter which was practically new.
You would be better off skipping an oil change than going to one of these tire places. Find a good mechanic who is honest or go to the dealer who will charge more but don't let them sell you more than you want.

Years ago in Michigan I took my car into a Firestone to fix a flat and was told that I needed over $900 dollars worth of work. I told them no thank you because I had just had my car serviced at my dealership. This type of thing happens all over. They prey on females and the elderly. I filed charges with the Michigan attorney general and Firestone Corporate. I never heard back from Firestone but I did hear back from attorney general.

It's really hard to find an honest shop. Having lived in many parts of the country this place is the worst I've seen. Not only do they try to up sale you on everything there rates are over the top.

At a recent oil change they said I need new shocks in the rear. Since the truck has 180k miles on it I thought it was possible. When I found out what they wanted I was shocked. $319.00 to replace just the rear shocks. I first thought they quoted me for all four, but it was for just the rear. Those things must have been gold plated.

I hadn't worked on my own vehicle in a long time so I went down to the local parts store and bought two quality shocks and installed them myself. Total install time was 30 minutes and not even having the proper tools. On a rack in a store this shouldn't take over 15 minutes.

By the way I will be going somewhere else to get my service.

Then they have a chance to get their act in gear and treat the villages residents fairly rather than a bunch of easy "marks"

Agree....the only way they will leave this area is to go out of business and that won't happen because there are so many uninformed people in this area. Probably not many know about the shady operations of Tire Choice. Remember, the percentage of people on this forum is so small compared to the number of people living here. I don't know if the BBB can get them out or not. The television show 20/20 often does undercover work with businesses like Tire Choice. A undercover sting would blow them right put of the water!!

Your regional manager, Alan Jenkins, threatened me by telling me that if I do not remove my post, your company is unwilling to work with me to reach a solution to you taking advantage of my grandmother and other seniors, elderly, and simply anyone without full knowledge of their car and how it works. Most of us don't know much about our cars, except that they get us from point A to point B. We don't know what a worn rotor feels and looks like no more than you know how to perform heart surgery. The difference: A doctor doesn't recommend heart surgery unless it is really needed, whereas you rely on sales and taking advantage of seniors and the elderly and uninformed to take money from people for unnecessary goods and services!!

I will never do business with Tire Choice again. I went in for a brake job that was advertised in the Daily Sun. When I arrived I showed the attendant the discount coupon offer in the newspaper. I forget the exact amount but it was around $179 for all four wheels. When I arrived they told me that my rotators could not be turn down and the bill was going to be $800. I told them that was bull and if they did not want to do the job I would go some place else. They then agreed to do the brakes job but then they did not want to give me the discount for two axels. Beware if you deal with them!!!!

They do the same thing if you take your golf cart in there too. The biggest thing is they tell you your front end needs rebuilt and new bushings, chances are you don't need anything they say. Even if they have it up on the lift and shake the front end and show you. On a Golf car the majority of the time you just need to tighten everything up.

Not picking on this post in particular but use it only to facilitate the following question:

What conclusion could/should be reached when there are as many of us that have been and continue to be satisfied with the products and services received by The Tire Choice (the one on 466 behind the Golden Coral)....if the commentary/complaints/issues are all aimed at the other store in Colony, I do not mean to take up type space.

As I pointed out in post #15 on this thread, the Tire Choice on 466 used the same tactics on me that the Colony store uses. I think the conclusion should be that one should either avoid Tire Choice or be aware that they may try to sell you unnecessary repairs.

I think the biggest benefit of this forum is to pass on local knowledge and spread rumors. Even if only a small percentage of TVers read TOTV, we still pass on what we read to our friends and golf groups, especially if it's a really good rumor...

Thanks for the heads up as I had a coupon for an oil change that I as planning on using. There are some businesses that will upsell you on their services. There were several in my hometown, so what's new.

I went to Town Fair Tire for a tire that was leaking air. Long story short, they jerked me around for several hours before doing the repair while I had a job interview. I was very upset. The manager didn't show any concern at all as he could care less.

I knew the daughter of the owner, and wrote him a letter. He fired that manager and I have used them again, as another service center was excellent.

I will avoid all the Tire Choice stores, and I am so sorry this happend to your grandmother.

I like the idea of disputing the charge if on a credit card. Let the CC company negotiate with them as the CC company will take away their use, if they determine that fraudulent activity occurred. She is lucky to have a grandson who cares so much about her, to run interference for thes types of vendors.

Good luck, getting this resolved to your satisfaction.

I went to tire choice a couple of times with the coupon for $20.00 oil change and they were fine but the last 2 times they recommended over $1000 in various repairs, fluids, etc. Friend told me about accu-tech automotive in oxford just a short left turn off 466 on left. Had no break lights and he stopped what he was doing and fixed them. Just a husband and wife operation. Chatted with the wife and she said the tire stores have given them such a increase in business giving second opinions. Her husband tolf me beware of any $20.00 oil changes, they would go bankrupt if that's all they did.

While working in a small town in Va near DC one of my Directors who owned a Ford store ask to use my office phone for a moment. I overheard his call to the service manager at his dealership. He berated the manager for allowing the average service invoice to total less than $100.(obviously a few years ago) Upselling is rampant in the automotive business. That is not necessarily bad if the proposed new part or service is legit.
My single experience at Tire Choice was very good, but the many cases recounted here have convinced me that I will not patronize this establishment again.

An investigative report by a local news agency might help for a while , but this kind of thing will just reoccur if owners lack integrity.

The whole point of a low cost service/oil change is to get you in there. You know the upswell is coming. You know management is pressed for high profits and a successful store. Combine that with a large concentrated number of individuals and you have a recipe for what is happening. None if us were born last night, we all know this stuff, you just have to say "no"

I for one am glad to always read posts warning others of bad service recieved as well as good. It is then up to us to make a decision whether to go there or not. I don't pay much attention to restaurants or movies since peoples tastes are vastly different, but retail stores or services hold more water to me. Keep giving us reports on your experiences and that will help us to make a decision.

It's also lending credibility that the preponderance of experiences related are negative. I too went there to have a nail removed from a tire, with a two-year-old car. They fixed the tire and did not try to upsell me, but I wonder... my husband was with me, and we do not look old or frail, sat in the waiting room with iPad and Kindle. Sorry to hear this!!:
1. Call Seniors vs Crimes (Sumter County Sheriff's Office on 466) and file a report.
2. If your Grandmother paid with a credit card, have her call them WITHIN 30 DAYS to file a dispute for misrepresentation of Services and the credit card company will review the case and potentially credit back some or all to your Grandmother (they debit the Merchant's account).
3. Ask for the CEO/COO of the Company and call and tell them you will contact FOX NEWS to run a "clip" on the local news to warn Consumers in the Area.........

....YES, I had a similar experience with PEP BOYS in Orlando and the credit card company credited me back. ALSO!! Tire Choice in Orlando does the same thing....Firestone owned by the same company but they are more ethical!

GOOD LUCK.

However, the problem with just saying "no", is what if you really do need some work done that you were not aware of. It's like the little boy who cried wolf, when do you know they are telling you the truth and when they are just scamming you, particularly if that is their custom. Being a single woman, I don't know much about cars or how to fix them so I must rely on a mechanic and hopefully he is reputable. I don't want to just say "no" in case I really do need some extra work, like brake pads. You need a reputable shop that you can trust and is not just telling you that you need all this work done for their own benefit when you really don't need it.

Then, go to Wildwood Tire

That's why we like this forum. People tell us where to go!

Seriously, now I have two recommendations for honest places (Sumter Tire and Wildwood Tire), and both not far from home.

Up north, we've used Costco for the last five tire purchases over the years. They offer fair prices and rotate the ties periodically for free. Too bad we don't have a Costco nearer than Altamonte Springs.

Thank you for your post and the heads up.
I need new tires and was going to have a set of Michelins put on at Colony Tire Choice.
I never did like the idea of not being able to see the service are from the waiting room as they have set up there.
I will go to another tire dealer...any suggestions?

I too had a bad experience there. I won't go into the details, but it wasn't as bad as this.

I went to Tire Choice to get an oil change and was told that my shocks were bad and should have been replaced at 100,000 miles (I had 106,000) miles on my car. Although I didn't feel any difference in driving, I had them do the work, feeling it was better safe than sorry. I'm wondering now if I got "taken". After reading this thread, I won't be going back to them

Yeah, I had an oil change and they told me I needed new shocks all around on my 2009 Lincoln MKS. They said the shocks were "leaking." What they were leaking I'll never know. There is nothing under my car to indicated and fluids are leaking and it rides like a pillow. 35000 miles on it. I suspected a scam and sure I'm right.

Don't know what you paid, But not unreasonable to believe that shocks are probably worn out at 100,000 mi.

Report this to Florida's Governor's office of consumer protection. My husband is on the board in Georgia and this is just what they look into and handle, among other things.
Senior abuse is tops on their list. Tire Choice could be facing a HUGE fine and other disciplinary action.

The manager of that place is responsible in how it is run. It all starts with him.

Just got back. Thought I might have a leak on my golf cart tire. Told me to park in front of 1st service bay door and someone would come out to help me. Parked the cart and immediately a service person came out, checked the tire, discovered a nail, removed it and repaired the tire. Checked the pressure in all 4 tires. The entire visit was 10 minutes. Cost...free. I'll be back, hopefully not for another nail.

I hope this "Mr. Jenkins" keeps reading the responses to your original and follow-up comments.

We are relatively new to The Villages and let me say that we will never do business with them under any circumstances because of your blow-by-blow report.

May I go a bit further and say that your grandmother is VERY lucky to have such a wonderful grandson like you who shows that you really care!

I hope everyone just tells everyone they know about what happened. I for one had experiance with them. I wanted an oil change and that was it. The guy comes out to me and shows me my ail filter it was full of dirt. The dirt was from the ground. The fact was I had personally changed it one week before. The car had been used only on paved roads. Of course I told them no. Then told them to return the car I no longer wanted an oil change. The owner or manager came out and tells me that I must pay seventy five dollars. My car was not even inside yet. I went over to my car closed the hood and drove away. Please don' t use them...

Bought some new golf cart tires there, had them installed with no problems or attempted up selling. We have also bought car tires there. If you are strong enough to avoid the upsell, they are fine.

Thanks for the heads up.... I will NEVER go to Tire Choice. Posts like this are a benefit to all. They can heed the warning or not. Totally up to them I posted about problem issues I with Rooms to Go in Ocala and basically got a bunch of crap from some posters. I really don't care if people heed the warning or not but putting out the info is help full to some.

Thanks for posting your experience and it is great that you are moving forward with your complaint.
Companies that take advantage of customers must be prosecuted.......

But, on the other hand.. I have taken my care to Tire Choice on Rt 441/27 several times and have had no problems. The service and office staff are great!!!!

Good luck...

Unfortunately I don't think its just Tire Choice. I went to Vavoline to get an oil change they recommended a radiator flush then I was at my local car dealer for another problem and not two weeks later recommended a radiator flush. I was at Tire choice and they wanted to change my serpentine belt with warnings it wouldn't last much longer, a year later its still going. WHO DO YOU TRUST?

I can recommend Wildwood Tire Company on 44. Family owned business that has been there a long time. Easy to deal with and fair prices. I have no connection the them other than being a happy customer.

Are you aware there are approximately 39,000 people that are members on TOTV and word gets around fast when people are taken advantage of. How long do you think you can continue to rob your customers and get away with it and still stay in business here?

I had a bad experience with Tire Choice on LaGrande Blvd. I don;t want to go into all the detail, but I will never take my car there for anything.
