View Full Version : Golf cart path on bridge over Lake Sumter

The bridge golf cart path is very tight and I feel unsafe driving on it. The only other option for me is to take Buena Vista to El Camino Real. I am trying to find a forum on this site to see if anyone has the same concerns. Has there ever been any talk about the Villages solving this problem.:cryin2:

This HAS been discussed several times on this forum. The speed limit is ten miles per hour and if you slow down to that or less when passing another cart you will be safer.
Most of us feel hesitant at first.

Yes, this has been discussed ad infinitum. From what I understand, after the bridge was built, The Villages was told by the county that the law required a sidewalk on the bridge. A sidewalk was added making cart path section very narrow.
It seems to me that they could have made the sidewalk a foot or so narrower, but who knows? The county may have regulation for the width of a sidewalk on a bridge like that and no regulations for the width of cart paths.
It seems that a little common sense would have made everything safer for everyone.

I haven't found it to be that bad. It's the cart drivers who are in a rush and are more than likely half in the bag that makes it unsafe. I've also heard complaints about the cart bridge over 441.

Absolutely correct. People just need to slow down and take their time. At night, when there is no one headed towards us, we accelerate to get across the bridge but slow down to a crawl when we see headlights coming towards us...which brings up another point that seat belts are not a half bad idea.

Whenever I am crossing that bridge, I creep along when meeting other carts. However, if there are no carts coming toward me, I must confess, I speed up to get across before one does show up.

I go across it quickly as I can also but I don't pass other carts unless they're doing 2 mph.

My bigger concern, on this bridge, is the car traffic a few feet away... A truck has jumped that big curb previously. But the cart traffic is no problem...

I wish the street legals would stay on the path instead of slowing down the car traffic on the bridge. It's ki d of frustrating going to work in the am.

I drive down the middle if possible.

Exactly, this bridge has been discussed previously. No real answers with the exception that a guard rail (metal or concrete) could be installed along the roadway to, hopefully, keep vehicles from jumping the curb and killing someone in a golf cart. As pointed out, this is the most dangerous life threating problem with this bridge. Hopefully, it will not take a vehicle/cart collision to get something done regarding a guard rail.

Full speed ahead if no carts coming towards me. If carts come to me I slow to a walking speed and fold in my side view mirror which sticks out and could hit the oncoming carts mirror if it is the same heigth.
