Generators useful in the villages??

We are about to move to the villages from the Northwest. Currently, we have a 5000 watt generator for use when we lose power. Is there a need for generators in the villages when the power fails? Thanks.

We moved into Fernandina in May this year and have had at least 8-10 outages, the longest lasted about 5 hours, the shortest were less than one minute. None were weather related that we could see. Maybe they were related to all the new construction south of 466A.

We arrived back home a couple of months ago to find power was out. To our chagrin, we could not get in the house, we had been depending on the garage door and had not yet left a key somewhere outside or with a neighbor. Waited about 1.5 hrs as I recall for power to come back on. No big deal, most of the neighbors were out in street so we all had a nice visit.

None of the outages (so far) have caused any problems with refrigeration, just some minor inconveniences.

SECO provides our electric service.

Our experience so far is that power outages are much more frequent here than what what we experienced in 35 years living in Marietta, GA.

We moved here two years ago, also from the Pacific Northwest. We brought with us an 8KW generator that will take care of our entire home in case of an outage. We have used it at least once. We run it about once a month just to keep it in shape. Like a lot of other things, you never know until you need it whether it will be of use. We would suggest bringing it with you. From what we understand, if there is a hurricane or tornado, you could be very glad you did.

Been here 13 years on the north side of 466 and have never lost power.

Been here 12+ years. Lost power when we had hurricanes back to back a number of years ago. However, I don't think it is worth the expense and nuisance of keeping a generator. I have a power converter (12V DC to 110V AC) that will take care of my refrigerator/freezer but it has gathered dust since I bought it.

Been here 13 years with huricanes etc, never lost power. Sell it to a neighbor, less to move.

I don't think you will need a generator. In the brand new neighborhoods there are some power outages that I believe are caused by hooking up new grids from time to time.

I gave mine to my son when I left S.Florida over 3 years ago and haven't regreted it. We're not fullproof here for hurricanes and are long overdue but who knows. I told my wife that if we lose power from a hurricane, we're visiting the Smokey Mountains until power is restored. It's not fun without A/C in the summer which is when hurricanes hit. I've been thru that several times in S. Fla.

Brings to mind a tip I read to check if your freezer lost power too long. Leave a bag of ice in freezer(s), if still cubes, OK, if melted together, probably have to through out food.

We lost a lot of food and had flooded basement when Irene and before Isabel came through Southern Maryland.

Here no basement, and the flooding ruined a lot of things, pictures, exercise equipment, cameras, power tools that we automatically could leave behind. Except the old pictures of my parents in the 1930's and some of me as a baby I am trying to restore. After unpacking.

We had two times very short outages in Fernandina so far, both related to new construction (maybe new houses) south of Pinallas Place.
