If you have a PC running XP, Vista, or Windows 7:
First use CCleaner which is free at: CCleaner - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com (http://download.cnet.com/CCleaner/) You'll only need the free version. First run Cleaner and then the Registry tabs. You won't have to deal with the other tabs at this point.
Then download Windows Security Essentials which is free at: Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download) I'd run a full scan for the first time. It'll take a few hours probably. After that set it up for a Quick Scan Daily. Make sure that "Real Time Protection" is set to ON and "Virus and Spyware definitions" should read UP TO DATE.
I wouldn't waste my time with the Malware program mentioned in a previous post. I downloaded it and ran it for a couple of months and it didn't find anything. The reason was that Windows Security Essentials had already taken care of any Malware, etc. I deleted it.
If you do the above two downloads you should see a marked improvement in your performance. Windows Security Essentials will run automatically and in the background. I run CCleaner every couple of days. It only takes a few seconds.

ThanksWe used CFLGeek (http://www.cflgeek.com/) (a TV Advertiser) and we were very satisfied with Eddie's in home service on both of our computers. We were fortunate that Eddie was able to be at our home within hours of our calling and he even gave up a part of their evening to be there for us. One of the things that's nice about their service is that you have a choice of having in store service, at home service or even remote service where I believe you can watch what they're doing to your computer as it's being done.

I agree, Malware is a good program. I have used it. I found that it was not needed if using Windows Security Essentials and CCleaner. If you were using just Malware you'd still need programs similar to Windows Security Essentials and CCleaner to finish the job. Just saying ...

Windows Security Essentials will do nothing for malware. It is a virus detector.
Just saying...

The following (in blue print) is a DIRECT quote from the Microsoft Website. They are not selling this product. They are giving it away! I've been using it since it's been in BETA. It is an excellent product.
What is malware?
Malware is short for "malicious software." Malware is any kind of unwanted software that is installed without your adequate consent. Viruses, worms, and Trojan horses are examples of malicious software that are often grouped together and referred to as malware.
How to help protect your computer from malware
There are several free ways to help protect your computer against malware:
◾Make sure automatic updating is turned on to get all the latest security updates.
◾Keep your firewall turned on.
◾Don't open spam email messages or click links on suspicious websites.
◾Download Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free, or another reputable antivirus and anti-malware program. If you run Windows 8 or Windows RT, you don’t need Microsoft Security Essentials. (see the warning below).
◾Scan your computer with the Microsoft Safety Scanner.
Here is the link for the above: CLICK HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/security/resources/malware-whatis.aspx)
NOT just saying... Presenting the Facts ...

These guys have done several different tasks and projects for me and I recommend them highly! Some issues can be solved over the phone/internet and they will come to your home if you wish. Their fees are incredibly reasonable.

Our computer is probably five years old. When I receive an e-mail from an unknown, I usually delete it. We don't do Facebook (privacy issues). We run a 'quick scan' every day and a full scan (takes about 1 1/2 hrs) once a week and we stay away from 'iffy' websites unless; also, check your uninstall programs too as my wife had gone to some coupon grocery site and all of a sudden, our access to the internet had changed to a different face page. Trust me, I'm no techie by any means but that was the first place I checked was for 'unstall programs' and that's where the program appeared. Un-installed it, got back my old face page accessing the internet and ran a full scan. Point being that there are some steps that you can take on your own first.

You are absolutely right. If you think you have a program that shouldn't be there but you are unsure you can always type the program name in a google search and see what comes up. If it is an unwanted program there is a great possibility that someone or some company has had an experience with it and has already posted something about it online and will recommend you to remove it.
