View Full Version : Manager at O'Shea's needs management training!

Went to O'Shea's yesterday for some football and wings. Had a great time, however, hubby went to the men's room and said it was very bad. Won't go into details. He thought the manager should be notified since it was so discussing. He did in a nice manner and the manager cussed him and threw him out!!
Luckily we were with another couple and they paid our bill. Manager told hubby he would take care of it, but didn't. I have no doubt he would have stuck the server with it and blamed it on hubby. What a jerk!!

To me it seems that more and more "managers" were not raised by parents and mentors who told them "the customer is always right" or something like "Thank you for letting me know....I'll take care of it as soon as I can".
Good workers aren't made on the job. They are raised by parents and taught by teachers who model a caring attitude and work ethic.

Could you give more details? Like, what was said and how the ejection came about? It just seems unbelievable that someone would say Excuse me, but your restroom needs cleaning and the manager throw him out on the spot. Surely there was more discourse.
I know the manager or owner monitors TOTV. Maybe we could hear his side too?

Friend was close by and witnessed the incident. Hubby thought the manager would appreciaate being notified of the poor condition of the restroom. The manager responded by cussing hubby out and told him to leave immediately. He told hubby to "go back up north were you came from." We are full time residents. Nice opinion he has of our snowbirds who patronize his establishment!
I have to agree with Ilovetv. No "people" skills.

"Go back up north where you came from"..... That pretty much explains the problem.
Fortunately, most workers don't display that attitude and are glad to be employed gainfully.

I completely agree. And many professionals of all levels are now being given courses on how to interact with others. My daughter teaches a course to third year medical students on bedside manners. And that includes American expectations.
Manners of any kind are still important. They teach you to behave as if you had some sense, even if you don't.

O'Shea's will be the next Havana.
First, let me say, congratulations to Havana on turning it around. Their new plan, singing staff, is interesting. More importantly, the food is now excellent. Good job!
Back to O'Shea's, impossible to enjoy food in a dirty atmosphere. If the bathroom is dirty I will bet the kitchen is a disaster. Owner has management problems in other places too.

There are two sides to every story and then there is the truth. I hope the manager sees these postings and gives us his side...until then I remain open to judgement. I have gone to O'Sheas on numerous occasions and have had pleasant experiences in all phases of the establishment. No rudeness, good food, great prices, entertainment, and the ladies room was clean.

My thoughts exactly! I have to admit it's laughable now. " I got thrown out of a bar, not for fighting, but for complaining about the restroom!"

Imagine being a waiter/waitress and having a boss like that.
It's one of the biggest reasons TV diners should be tipping heavily when a manager does not address a problem presented (and the server acts like a responsible grownup, industrious worker).

I hope he does see this thread. But remember, his "side" isn't necessarily
The truth. A manager NEVER responds to a customer under any circumstances
The way he did.
I Get the feeling O'Sheas isn't a favorite place. It was our first time there

Outrageous reaction from the Manager.
He should have been EMBARRASSED that a customer told
him his restaurant bathroom was disgusting,
Oh so sorry - that would be a reaction from an intelligent,
DECENT, person that actually cares!!

As I am the manager that this gentleman talked to, I find it laughable to say that he kindly or politely in anyway. I am sure that no one was in the restroom when he was calling me a F(*&^^( A**)^$#% or a P#$@* of S%^(). After directing him to leave he made threats and began berating me and my establishment to my guests. His friends who have been here many times, insisted to pay his tab as, " He gets like that sometimes," even though I offered to take care of it. While this website has it's pluses, it's minuses are that people can hide behind their screen name and make false, derogatory or outright mean claims without anyone to correct them. It's the like the one commercial," It's on the internet. It must be true." I used to monitor this site daily to gauge our success and failures, but realized when some regulars were told they couldn't post anymore things about us because they were positive and they must work for us. So in turn I will leave you and this site. Come on in talk to me or ask any of the thousands of Northerners that know me how I am. I may get grumpy from the time to time from the 80-100+ hours I work in trying to make this place better, but I'm a pretty good guy. I truly cared of the opinions on this site and used them as teaching tools to help. I now realize there are people who just want everyone to fail or want to hurt people and their livelihoods. I'm sure it's not most, but you are your weakest link.

Mike, thank you for taking time to tell your side of the story. There are always two sides and as they say, "the truth often falls in the middle".
The majority of responders, including the OP have been more than satisfied with your establishment in the past and I think this thread doesn't really reflect on the experience of most of your patrons.
I would urge the OP to talk to you and clear the air, as should have been done after her husband's ejection.
I have never eaten at O'shea's but I will give you a try when we get down again after Christmas.

When I read the OP, my first thought was, we don't have all the information. Very rarely would one be kicked out of a restaurant for "politely" mentioning to the manager that the restroom is dirty.
I am glad the manager finally came on with his side of the story so that we can know that the original story was probably not all true facts, and that the real situation is somewhere in the middle.
I wonder what lead up to him calling you an "A**hole"? Did he just walk out of the restroom and say "Hey, a**hole, your restroom is dirty," or what?
We still don't know the real story, in my opinion. but I discount the OP's account somewhat.

We need to keep in mind that the conversation reported in the first post is NOT first hand info...The OP stated it was her husband who had the "conversation" with the manager, not her...

If the restroom was really dirty, O'Shea's needs to keep it clean, so these type of confrontations wouldn't happen.

Mike, It is likely there have been posts questioning the validity of your "white knights", but I assure you that the administration of this site did not tell them to quit posting. It would behoove you to count to 10 and continue monitoring this site. There are over 35,000 members and each member has at least 10 close friends.
Also the old adage is usually valid: where there is smoke, there is fire. Keep an open mind. For every person who vocalizes their complaint, there are easily ten people who don't want the confrontation. They just vote with their feet.

Well said.
What customer, going out for dinner and some relaxation with friends, wants to spend their time asking to see a manager, and then waiting for the manager to appear, to report the obvious.....that the bathroom is filthy and disgusting and probably a reflection of the cleanliness of the kitchen, refrigerators, freezers, salad prep area, etc. etc.
It's a manager's job to make sure the place is clean and sparkling so that the customer can spend their time enjoying themselves. That's why it's called "Hospitality Management".
If I've spent 20 minutes upset because of inattention to cleanliness, service or food, I'm sure not going to spend 20 minutes more waiting for a manager who has eyes to see filth him/herself, and does not care enough to clean it or have it cleaned. We'll go elsewhere.

I was at O'Shea's Sunday to watch the Eagles game. I am sure the truth does lie somewhere in the middle. The Men's room was filthy BUT we are talking about a sports bar around half time of a football game with many half drunk guys missing the urinal and tossing their used paper towels on the floor half the time. Should the staff keep a person IN the bathroom to monitor it? I think not. Should they clean up a little more often? Probably so, because I am sure they are aware how messy it gets on a football Sunday. My wife used the Ladies room and reports all was fine there. Hmmm guys are slobs who woulda guessed? We have been there every Sunday since mid September same same each week. Do we return? Of course, they have the NFL ticket. As far as the wait staff? Hit or miss, this week a very sweet friendly young girl took care of us who should not make being a waitress her life's ambition because she was terrible. Couldn't find her for long periods she forgot about our drink order while our food got cold etc Hopefully she is a student and will more on. Other weeks however the wait staff has been outstanding. But they probably put on more staff on Sundays for the games and they may not be the best trained. If the "manager" we are speaking og is the older gentleman who is usually at the door he seems friendly enough and warmly greets patrons as they enter and usually has the air of someone who is REALLY busy (imagine that at a sports bar on Sunday)
So the moral of my story is if you want a pristine fine dining experience DON'T go to an Irish Sports bar on a football Sunday. I f you want a few sloppy beers, some good inexpensive Irish themed food in a fun atmosphere then go to O'Sheas on Sunday just expect a Rowdy but fun experience. And guys try to hit the urinal once in a while! :icon_wink:

I think this thread is like getting a divorce. There's her side of the story, his side of the story, and the truth".
My son works in the hotel managemet industry and an unclean bathroom is unacceptable A spotless bathroom is acceptable. I have been in bars where people have been so busy, no one is delegrted to clean up bathroom messes. Because of sanitary reasons, like running out of toilet paper. is something i would have mention to management in apolite way. Name calling is childish and over the top behavior for anyone. We don't know what was said and how it was said that started this bruhaha.

Restaurants and Bars fail all the time. Poor Management is the most common culprit.
When I see some part of a Pub or Restaurant that looks neglected and dirty, including the restrooms, I wonder what the kitchen is like in terms of cleanliness, food safety practices, etc.
Watch a few episodes of Bar Rescue.
That will give you some perspective on the matter!

Problem here is whether the bathroom is filthy or are the people using this facility filthy? How often have any of us used a bathroom early upon arriving at an event or for dinner or even shopping and found the restrooms to be satisfactorily cleaned and to step in an hour or two later and look at the trash job.
Should commercial establishments be required to keep fulltime personnel on staff to maintain bathroom facilities for the lazy, sloppy people who think nothing of leaving a total mess? I don't know what has happened to the US population but I don't think I've ever seen such lack of respect people have for themselves and the property of others.
In our state and certain counties, people 18 years and older could drink. The 18 year old bars never, after a long Friday or Saturday night crowd being served, had restrooms that were trashed like those in The Villages after a busy day or evening.
If you drop a hand towel or some tp on the floor, pick it up and toss it. If you slobber water and soap all over the surfaces, give a quick wipe with the towel you used to dry your hands. Ladies, put your butts on the seat and stop watering the surfaces for the next patron, geez! Gentlemen, if the situation requires you to sit and not use the urinal, swallow your pride and sit. Maybe we all need to be a little more respectable and responsible for ourselves and not expect someone else to clean up after us.
This could be another whole thread BUT the ladies dressing rooms in stores are another burr under my saddle. In all my years I haven't seen such slovenliness from the female gender. Have most of the women on the planet forgotten how to rehang clothing, zip it up or button it and carry it out of the dressing room and replace it on the rack or hang it on the return rack? It's so nice to see clothing inside out, in a heap and all over the sitting surface and floor of the dressing room. What happened to personal pride?

Peachie---you have addressed things that bother me too. Another is the movie theater---- My husband and I go at least once a week---Brownwood mostly because the seating is wonderful-- At least 85% of the attendees are Seniors---lots of popcorn, drinks, candy, nachos and hotdogs consumed. When we get up to leave, I cannot believe the amount of boxes, wrappers and even drink cups that are left on the floors for the theater workers to clean up. Trash cans are abundant---I certainly don't understand!

Sad to say but most men are slobs . It takes so little to be careful and considerate in a Men`s Room or a Movie Theater .

Sadly it has been my experience that the dogs would be more polite than most men .
No dog has ever flipped me off here for slowing down at a Yellow light and stopping when a light turns Red !
I actually feel sorry for their no doubt long suffering wives .

I lived for a while in Northern New Jersey and quickly learned that one never slows for a Yellow light that you are expected to instead speed up because at least 3 cars will go through the Red Light ! This was back in about 1980 .
A couple of years later I was relocated to Buffalo NY . Not long after I arrived I was driving my boss to a mutual appointment to call on a customer . The light turned Yellow and quickly Red --- I hit the gas -- and he went NUTS on me --
" What are you doing " ? He shouted .
Well I can share that the driving habits of suburban NYC have more than migrated North as that is the current protocol in suburban Buffalo .
However when I arrived here I thought that since we are all or mostly retired that I could actually change those " norms " and obey the law .
Apparently I am very incorrect . Interestingly enough it seems more profound since about Oct. 1st .Gee wonder why that is ? !
When someone does give me the " Male Driver Salute " I enjoy getting in back of them to read where their auto is from --- dare I say the NorthEast "Mega-glopogis ". Metro NY , Metro Boston et al .
My only conclusion on such occasions is that they must be racing home as they have a pressing phone conference with " The White House " for input on domestic and world affairs ! :a040:

Hmm, I was wondering when someone would take the opportunity to turn this into a "bash the Snowbirds theme."

Not a bash the snowbirds just an honest observation .

I thought Jim did a pretty good job of leaving room for interpretation.
There is no question that throughout Florida, once snowbirds arrive, for whatever reason, there is a much more hurried atmosphere. Kind of a: I'm On Vacation and I have got to get all the fun in before I go home intensity. I observed this at Sarasota and even at "laid back" Crystal River.

A needless observation, and not backed up by facts.
My husband was in a roundabout today when a girl with a FL license plate stopped IN THE ROUNDABOUT to send a text.
Horrible drivers come from everywhere. (Also not backed up by facts.)

This is a forum. There are NO needless observations unless they are rude, crude and vilifying.

I admit that I am guilty of changing the subject . I apologize to any and all offended .
I should have initiated a separate Thread had I felt it really worth mentioning and if any are interested I am about to do so .

Observations sometimes come across as accusations when not backed up by facts. I call that rude.

I guess we could not possibly be talking about the same post.
I suspect that if you took a poll you would find those "facts" that you desire.
30% of my neighbors are snowbirds who are here off and on throughout the year and a popular topic of conversation at our impromptu steet meetings is the Common Perception by all that life in the winter in TV is less laid-back than at other times.
