Based on my recent colonoscopy the dreaded "C" word has been established. I've begun the process with the initial blood test and will then under go a CT. I will need to find a GREAT surgeon that specializes in colon cancer surgery. As I head into these new uncharted waters any and all advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Skip, I wish had the name of a great surgeon to provide to you, but I want to say I am sorry to hear of your DX and will keep you in my prayers for an excellent treatment and recovery program.

If in your position, I would probably consult with Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. I would want as much knowledge and technology on my side as I could muster. If additional treatment is required following surgery, it is possible you could do follow-up in The Villages.

Skip,

I know exactly what you are going through I had the same problem not to long ago,and I can help you with your request.

The surgeon who preformed the operation on me is: Dr. Dwight D. Landman, PA FACS, FACCRS.

You can contact him at.

Ocala Surgical Associates
1541 SW 1st Ave.
Ocala,FL 34471
Telephone 352-622-8152

I know exactly what you are going through having gone down that road, however after you meet with Dr. Landman much of your concerns will go away, I can assure you will be in good hands with him.

I will be happy to help you in any way that I can should you have any other questions or concerns.

Skip, I do believe that my oncology surgeon is also a colon cancer specialist. He performed my breast cancer surgery and I can't tell you how much I admire him. He's been written up in the Daily Sun a few years ago for some of his research he has done on cancer surgery. He's connected with Waterman Hospital in Tavares and I was there and think they are a very good hospital. His name is Dr. Mascarenhas and his # 352 742 2286. I recently saw him on TV on the Leesburg channel that has doctor's giving presentations on the latest development of their specialties and he was unbelievably informed about his specialty. He's a very nice guy too and I'm sure you will like him. Let me know if you have any questions, will be happy to answer them by PM.

Good luck to you and I will say a prayer for your successful recovery.

I want you to know that I am in close contact with three friends who had the same diagnosis and all three are doing fine today.

You have our prayers and some very good advice above.

Hugs to you.

Helene and I are both cancer survivors.

I also would call Moffitt. i had breast cancer 11 years ago. As soon as I got the mammogram results ,I picked up the phone and called Moffitt. Received wonderful treatment and care.

Thanks gang for the outpouring of support and information. Right now I'm in the process of gathering as much information as I can to fight this thing head on. I've also rec'd PM's with additional support and info. It's great to know I live in such a caring community as The Villages surrounded by such wonderful people.

I have a surgery scheduled with Tammy Luk, who does a lot of colon surgery. She's young, but I was impressed by her calm and her knowledge. I'm comfortable in putting my life in her hands.

I told a nurse that I know that I was having surgery by her. She had also had surgery by Tammy and was *very* pleased with how things went and with her recovery.

Bizdoc, I have heard a lot of wonderful things about Dr. Luk, she is highly recommended by a lot of my friends. Good luck to you also!!

Skip, colon cancer is a very curable cancer when caught early, similar to breast cancer. Colonoscopy tests are very beneficial in finding it early enough to be treated successfully. My Dad had colon cancer in his late 70's, early 80's and had very successful surgery - no chemo, no radiation. He passed away at 94 and had no recurrence of the disease. I immediately went for my first colonoscopy at that time and they found 2 pre-cancerous cysts which would have turned to cancer if I hadn't done my early screening. Good luck to you again and am saying lots of prayers for you.

Sorry to hear the "C" word from your doctor. Hopefully, he caught it in the early stages, so your success in beating the "C" will be greater.

I only know general information, as my mother had colon cancer at age 86, and they removed a lot of her large colon. The doctor who performed the surgery didn't perform at 100% as she was losing weight over a couple of years period. She also had to wear a colostomy bag. Six months later, her colon had grown so they could reattach it and the bag was not needed.
One time she got sick, and was sent to another hospital. The doctor found a nick in her colon and was losing blood. He repaired it, and she started puting weight back on.

I think it's smart to choose the right surgeon so your success will be greater.

Best wishes in beating this and going on living your life, "healthy".

BTW - My mom passed away at 93, and it was not from colon cancer. Her heart just gave out.

For all men, it is very important to start having a colosocopy done starting at 50, even if it's just precautionary. I have to go every 5 years. I hate the prep, but it's a necessary evil and the hardest part of having it done.

Home | Moffitt Cancer Center (http://Www.Moffit.org). Is Moffitt web site

These are the Moffitt surgeons for colorectal cancer:

Surgery
David Shibata, MD, FACS, section head of Colorectal Oncology
Sophie Dessureault, MD, PhD, FACS, FRCS(C)
Kenneth Meredith, MD, FACS
Mokenge Malafa, MD, FACS
Pamela Hodul, MD (rectal only)
Richard Karl, MD, FACS (rectal only)

Moffitt uses Interdisciplinary teams. In other words your surgeon, Oncologist, radiation oncologist and any others involved are on a team that meets together to plan your treatment and care.

Moffitt is not a difficult drive. A little over an hour. This side of Tampa. Very easy drive. No tolls.

I quote:

What separates Moffitt from other institutions is our commitment to Total Cancer CareŽ — a personalized course of treatment that provides individual therapies based upon a patient's unique genetic fingerprint. The only Florida-based cancer center to receive a National Cancer Institute designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center, Moffitt is one of only 41 centers nationwide that make up an alliance that allows us to share research and practices that lead to better outcomes faster and more effectively. Together we're redefining how the battle against cancer is won.

Skip 2 I also agree with those who recommend Moffitt. I had good results with Mayo in Jacksonville which is a longer drive, just over 3 hours. After a colonoscopy I was advised that I had a mass in my colon and I needed surgery. I went to Mayo where they did a second colonoscopy ( I was preped for surgery just in case). They were able to remove the mass (turned out to be benign) without surgery. I'm saying a prayer that you are being restored to perfect health.

Thanks 2BNTV. I've had regular colonoscopies for the last 15 years so hopefully this is an early stage find. Good news for you is they now have a new prep called Prepopik that worked great and is easy to take. Two 5 oz. cups, 1 @ 9 AM and 1 @ 4 PM along with a few Dulcolax and that's all there is. The prep was easy to drink down and was a MAJOR improvement from the previous stuff I had to drink and gag with.

Skip,

May I ask who is your doctor who first ordered the colonoscopy, and do you like him/her? I had 8 precancerous polyps removed last spring and must go back for another in 3 years. We are searching for a doctor here now that we are frogs.

My prayers and best wishes for you, Skip. Fortunately it sounds like you caught it early.

I used Dr. Paul Goldberg who was recommended by my Primary Dr. The practice is Gastro Intestinal Consultants @ 910 Old Camp Road Bldg 200 Ste 202. 352-383-7703. I can't say that his bedside manner is great as he's short and too the point. But I guess that's what we need to have when we're dealing with these issues. I had 3 polyps removed last March but he wasn't pleased with one of the views and that's why he scheduled another procedure 8 months later. The follow up brought me to this position.

Skip2 - And if you are feeling an absence of smiling, just remember, when they are all done and you're cancer free, you can look people in the eye and tell them you have proof that you are now a perfect *** ****. <smile>

At the end of the day, you are surrounded here by folks who will cry with you, pray with you, care about you, and laugh with you. Can't ask for a better support system anywhere. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Same hospital. The one in The Villages is a "branch"of the main location in Tampa. The main location is in Tampa on the University of South FL campus. http://www.moffitt.org

Moffitt here in TV is a name; anything of consequence is handled in Tampa. The professionals in Tampa are top-flight and on a par with Sloan Kettering, MD Anderson and others.

I am recovering from a metastatic melanoma handled by Moffitt and I can tell you the place is professional, compassionate and caring.

Skip, my prayers go out to you.

Been through the Big "C" surgery a few times plus other types of colon surgery, if you wish I would be willing to share my experiences. Currently only have 6 ft. of small colon left.
