Popeye is a calm, gentle, and loving All American mix with very good manners. He is great on a leash and loves to cuddle, always watching and waiting to please. He is neutered and up to date on rabies shots. Please send me a PM for more information - he would make a wonderful companion! Thanks.

Do you need a home for your kitty, or pet care? He's beautiful. Thanks. Donna

Such a beautiful boy.

Yes, he is beautiful inside and out. Personally, I haven't met a dog who can "read" the signs of what is expected like this boy. The other thing that amazes me is when dogs around "Poppy" are barking and excited, he remains calm and doesn't woof. I'm not an expert but I think he would be a good candidate for pet therapy. He's a sweetie!

He really sounds like a wonderful boy. I would love to adopt him, but we already have our two-dog limit. Fingers crossed he finds a new home for Christmas.

Where did Popeye come from to need a home? He looks shiny and healthy, and the reason he's awesome, my Emma just woofed (dog shout), is that he must have a lot of boxer in him!

oh my, Cyndy, you should see her roll her big beautiful eyes when the kitty is nearer to me than her. We are pair-bonded.
someone else deserves to have a fine dog and companion with boxer blood.

P.S. I'm wondering ... did JayJay have his eye surgery?

Yup, Popeye is very special for sure. And yes, thanks to so many of our wonderful Villagers and friends, JayJay had her eye surgery on Thursday! It was a success and she will have her stiches out in two weeks. After that, it's time to find this beautiful lab and other sweet mix girl her forever home. Villagers are fantastic people and thank you from the bottom of my heart and Jay's for all you do! :BigApplause:

Super! Fingers crossed that it will work out for you.

I have read opinions from dog trainers that it is okay to let the dogs figure out by themselves who will dominate. I don't know if I could do it!

Our dog, who is usually rather submissive, will not let another dog jump up on his back. He puts up with just about everything but that. He's always been able to work it out with another dog amicably. Other times another dog will dominate him. I try not to interfere unless it's going to get too physical.

But you know your dog best. Good luck with the new member of your family.

Bosoxfan (Mr. & Mrs.),

I also volunteer at the sanctuary and in my three years working there Popeye is indeed one of my favorites. In fact he has been everyone's favorite! Thank you so much for taking a chance on him. I know it is a concern bringing in a new pet and introducing it to the established family pet. We all hope and pray in a short time everything with work out between your beloved Bonyta and Popeye.

QUOTE=Barefoot;810249]I'd love to hear an update on how Popeye is fitting in, and how Bonyta is doing.[/QUOTE]

I was hoping to not have to post this but I see Popeye was in the paper for adoption today. This is a letter we wrote when we had to give him back.....
I know you've heard that we couldn't keep Popeye. I want you to know that this was done with extreme sadness on our part. We really have come to love this guy and are heartbroken that we had to make this decision. He was such a love with us but there have been two instances that scared us. The first one was when we had a plumber in the house. Popeye went after him. He only got the guys pants so that was good but we were surprised by this as he hadn't exhibited this behavior previously. The back breaker was an incident at the dog park yesterday. As you may or not know we've been taking him & Bonyta there daily. He did seem to get excited a few times to the point of posturing with other males but I was always able to get him to calm down by commanding him to stop using only my voice. He responded everytime to these commands until yesterday. There was a male dog and he was involved in a fight. It was frightening. He got a hold of this dog and would not let go. I tried to pry his mouth open with my barehands and could not budge him all the while screaming at him to let go. Deb when he didn't let go I had to continuously punch him on the side of his head until he let go. Luckily he didn't mame the other dog because come to find out he appeared to have mostly collar. Deb, I've always heard how a Pit's jaw locks and never had seen it but I believe that's what I experienced yesterday. The way he acted after the incident leads me to believe he didn't understand what happened. It was almost like a Jekyll & Hyde thing. I felt bad for him because I think there's something in him he has no control over. As I said he's such a lover and for him to go to a place where he becomes dangerous is scary. He is Pitbull, Labrador mix and seems to be having an inner battle with that. Yesterday brought out a scary side of him. Please know we wish nothing but the best for him.Carol got your voice message and we appreciate you reaching out to us. She will call you when a little time passes. You're right, we can't stop thinking about what could have happened. We wanted so much for this to work.God Bless you and your familyMark

Like I said I didn't want to post this but it's my belief that although Popeye is very lovable he is a very dangerous dog in certain situations. I firmly believe he needs to be kept away from other male dogs.

I'm so sorry, Bosoxfan. Everyone knows you tried.

We once had a rescue that we had to have euthanized. We were living in NJ, and this dog had a Jekyll/Hyde syndrome as well. And there was no telling when he would flip and who he would go after. This was back in the '80s, and we were told by our vet if we gave a biting dog away, even to a shelter, we could get sued. I don't believe no-kill shelters were as common then.

It is such a shame and heartbreaking. You must feel terrible.

Seeing him up for adoption again has me rethinking my decision. I'm so scared that the folks putting him up aren't taking my warnings seriously. My wife has said to me that if she weren't there to see with her own eyes what Popeye became she would never have believed it.If something happens .....well I'm praying! !!

I hope for the best for him. Maybe he should live his life out in the shelter.

I can totally believe your account, because I've been through it with this other dog we had back in the '80s. Something would snap, and he would flip out. Then suddenly he would become docile again. The fact that you see mostly he is on the good side makes it very difficult.

Bosoxfox, when you didn't post on the status of Popeye, I was very afraid that there was a problem. You did the very best you could, no question of that. I am so sorry for the outcome. I can imagine that the whole process was very painful for you and your wife. My heart also goes out to DebfromMaine who tried her very best to find this dog a good home. But some dogs are unpredictable, and sadly, Popeye seems to be one of them.

I love dogs and I want to see each and every one find a loving home. But I do believe that there are some dogs that have multiple personalities that should not be rehomed. I say this sadly and reluctantly. But I think that once a dog has been identified as unpredictable, it is wrong to put them in another home where the dog could snap, and potentially injure a stranger, a child, another dog.

It makes me thank God that we were lucky enough to get a rescue with four previous homes who nevertheless turned out to be the sweetest dog in the whole wide world.

Bosoxfox, I am so sorry.

Bosoxfan the image of the fight at the dog park is violent and frightening. The fact that it ended without bloodshed is a blessing. I respect your ability to be Alpha which makes the situation you describe even more frightening since unknowenly people baby these dogs and with a dog like Popeye the consequences could be disatrous. In my mind he is not suitable for adoption,
two strikes have proven that. Hopefully Popeye can live out his life in a protected environment.

I realize this thread goes back a few months, but this is such a frightening story. Just last week, I had to say goodbye to my beloved 15+ year old yorkie, and I have been considering rescue. Of course, I realize that a rescue yorkie cannot be compared to a recuse that is part pit bull.

What concerns me, however, is that ANY rescue organization would put that dog up for adoption again knowing the history, especially after reading the letter you wrote upon surrender. I think I read all the posts in this thread, and it appears to me that the dog was put up for adoption again fairly soon after you turned him back in. How can any organization with a conscience do that?

I so admire the people that do rescue and fostering, and I know there are many, many happy endings, but this story is a wake-up call for me.

There are many wonderful dogs available through adoption groups, but the adoption group has an obligation to reveal any former issues-big or small- that dog has. It's not fair to the adopter or the dog. If the agency hides a potential problem it's almost certain the dog will be returned. Most adoption groups want a forever home and the easiest way to assure that is to try their best to match the correct dog with the correct family/person. When key issues are not addressed upfront, it makes it hard to know if a dog is appropriate for each situation. Some people can handle an issue that would be an absolute deal breaker for another family. I have fostered many dogs and one in particular I disliked so much and thought would never find a home. The second I took him out of his crate he would mark in my house and continue as I rushed him outside. Well, this older woman came to see him and thought he was the greatest thing there was. The marking issue I thought was a deal breaker didn't faze her one bit. She took him home, worked on it til it disappeared and they lived happily ever after.
I also can not believe that the rescue group you got Popeye from put him up again for adoption so soon after a return after hearing what he did. It seems very irresponsible to me. I can only hope they disclosed his behavior or I would think they would be liable for any injury that occurred from what he did next.
Bosoxfan, I am very sorry for what happened to you. The whole incident sounds very traumatizing. You can really get your heart scared in so many ways. I hope it doesn't totally turn you off to rescue but I also understand when people are reluctant to go that route.

I can't THINK of an exception to this. My favorite people love dogs.
