As President Obama just said "He no longer belongs to us, he belongs to the ages". RIP Nelson Mandela.

I'm sorry that he wasn't strong enough to speak in public. I'm sure he wanted to.

And let's not forget; he was a loyal, registered member of the communist party. Most media and conversations avoid this truth and fact.

I wonder what we would be if we had gone through even a small portion of what this man and his family endured. Remember him for his greatness and pursuit of peace, it could have justifiably gone either way!

The White House announced today that President and Mrs Obama will attend Nelson Mandela's funeral next week in South Africa, along with world leaders from around the globe.

Also flying on Air Force One will be former president George W Bush and Laura Bush. The elder Bushes will not attend. The Clintons will also attend.

Does that negate or devalue what he did?

Thank you for your response. I am merely trying to show that there are two sides to every story. I try to stay with the facts and truths surrounding events. It is recorded that the man by choice, chose to live his life as he did. I find personally, that an individual who openly aligns himself with the likes of a Fidel Castro, and Moa (Butchers of humanity) should be studied. An individual who chooses to place one's family, friends, in the line of fire for their own purposes and gains; should have their character evaluated. The Gains I speak of are from his multiple businesses, in the $millions. Yet live reports show the vast majority still live in unthinkable poverty.

Like many great men Mandela had feet of clay. Think of most recent, Martin Luther King Jr. and Bill Clinton. That does not negate the good that they did for the world.

I think that JBlum was trying to make the point that he like others who have been given many accolades are human beings and not perfect beings. Not any of us are.

I think he was a strong man to stand up and fight for what was right. Having said this I hope we more remember the 19 or 20 year old kid who was shot and died for our country while screaming for his mother as he died. They are the real HERO's as they never made it to the 90's and instead died so we oculd have the life we do. God bless them and lets never forget.!!!

Good post graciegirl.

I have not really studied the life of Nelson Mandela in any detail but his turning his 12 years of personal despair into hope for millions of others is really something. The media and many others also played a huge role in the making of the legend of Nelson Mandela but he does some worth all the attention paid to his life. Quite a leader.

Doubt if any leader, however, is perfect in anything he or she has done of their life. I once wrote a very detailed paper on Martin Luther for a History course. There was a man with a kinds of weaknesses but he had a profound impact on the Reformation period.

People should before idolizing, lionizing, and heaping praise upon someone...

Most peoples knowledge is what the media tells them...not an ideal place to get your information.

I have more than enough information about this man to heap praise, on him. What negativism is there out there other than his personal political beliefs (HIS ABSOLUTE RIGHT) ? McCarthyism is long ago dead...Thank God

Nelson Mandela unified his country when he became President. He chose to forgive and move on rather than to seek retribution. Having the mostly white crowd chant " Nelson! Nelson! Nelson!..." when he appeared at the 1995 World Rugby Cup shows how well received he was by most South Africans. He was a great man. I am in awe of people like this who dedicate their lives to the benefit of others. Additional inspirational leaders I can name are Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and Mahatma Ghandi. Where these people come from I have no idea, but they emerge at times of need and arise to move humanity down the righteous path at great personal sacrifice.

I usually get my information about anything I am researching from as many different sources as possible. Not just local newspapers and reports like those from South Africa for Nelson Mandela but I would also look at those from a variety of other nations' media.
