Throughout most of Florida it is called the Pool Screen because it is seldom erected over an area that does not have a swimming pool.
The secondary, and also common term, is screened enclosure.
I never heard it called a birdcage until I came to TV, and I grew up in Florida.

The Villages Realty has deemed it correctly called a "birdcage". Therefore it is and will forever, in perpetuity be a "birdcage". End of discussion. By the way, congratulation Lynn, some guy got a good catch.

I perceive this would have been a good spot for the sarcasm icon.

We always heard it called the "pool cage", since it enclosed our pools, or lanai cage if you didn't have a pool. Up here it is a birdcage, I assume when it is added over the slab. We had a cage for so long, we opted for the railing on the slab look. Ends the debate quite nicely for us...hahaha! :)

I often see "mansard lanai", but the word mansard is the actual shape of the top of the birdcage.

Same here. Been in Florida over 60 years, almost all in S. Fla. and never heard the term "bird Cage". We always called it "screened in pool or patio"

My hubby and I both grew up in Clearwater and left for the West in '91. The term "Bird Cage" was commonly used when we lived there. So it was not in any way new to us in TV.
I thought it was in common use through out Florida for the past 40+ yrs.
