What's with the sewer odor in Collier? It's worse at night but still present on and off during most days. It's stronger with north and easterly winds but is off and on in all wind directions. Is it from Evans Prarie swamp or is there a sewer facility in the area. Some nights it is very strong and makes sitting on the lanai unbearable.

Oh no, this is awful news seeing as we bought a home in Collier too.

Are the neighbors complaining to anyone who can do something about this? Hope someone can get this problem resolved soon.

The golf courses water with treatment plant discharge. Lots of extra water on the new 9 at Evans Prarie.

When there is a cold snap the ponds and prairie waters "turn over" which brings the decay from the bottom to the top. It doesn't usually last more than a few days.

I am surprised the sales rep did not tell you about the smell. I thought everyone know about it

No one said a word to us about the smell. When we bought the house there was no smell on the few days we were there.

Is this a smell that can be smelled in other villages or just Collier? How long does it last a few months, weeks, or days?

In TV you pay extra for things like Premium lots (incl those that back up to a roadway) and for Natural Fragrance. Enjoy.

It may just be temporary. We live in Liberty Park and someone who doesn't live in Liberty Park posted on TOTV that the water treatment plant made Liberty Park smell. We have never smelled it and neither have our neighbors - some of whom have lived here for 8 years. Call The Villages and them about it.

Some ponds are quite smelly. I drive by one pond in my golf cart which seems to be fragrant about 30% of the time ... it probably depends which way the wind is blowing. I always feel sorry for the people who paid a premium to back on that pond.

That's because to the sales reps that smells like money.

It may or may not be true regarding the ponds over turning in cold weather but that same odor permeates that entire area at any given time of the year which leads me to if perhaps it is the same (cause) ( function) (operation) each and every time

I feel like crying. Well guess I'll have to wait until we get there to see how bad it is. We may have to move.

Years ago a landscaping company set up shop half a mile from our house. They had a compost pile and the smell was awful, unbearable and we could not sit outside. Sometimes you could smell it in the house. Eventually, enough people complained and the city made them move. I don't know if I could put up with that smell again.

Don't get too upset, a lot of people pile on when these type of posts are made. They like to slam people who have purchased premium lots. Relax, more than likely this is only a temporary situation. Often when a lot of building is going on and new golf courses are getting watered you get some odor, but it passes. I wish I had the money to get one of those beautiful lots backed up to a pond. The birds and wildlife are awesome.

good grief..I drove thru there this morning and the air was crisply pure and beautiful. I opened car windows for my puppy and hoped she get a whiff of natural ponds. But no luck, so I took her to the woods beside Lake Okahumpka. I promise you that you will rarely sniff the turning water, bc it happens AFTER it has been hot and then turns cold...2 maybe 3x in winter?
if I am wrong about the temporary turn of foul air, you Collerians, and it is perpetually awful please give a shout and correct me.

Noticed a strong odor coming from the ponds while playing Mangrove a few weeks ago. I would somehow learn to live with the odor to have some of those views!!!

There was a thread a while ago where the poster asked if there were any problems with water lots. I mentioned that sometimes homes that back up to ponds may encounter a bad smell. Well I had a number of people dump on me over that comment – I was jealous, I was anti The Villages, anti American, blah blah blah. I feel kind of vindicated because I'm obviously not the only person who has noticed these smells do crop up. Tippy club, please don't jump to conclusions. It most likely is a transient thing that only happens a few times per year.

well, here I am having moved to TV apr of 2013 with a fine lake view, and no smell. nothing. what's wrong with my lake? is it too newly made? I don't mind sharing the air with nature, but so far nothing smells. I kind of like strong smells of nature. goat cheese, ya'll.

There is a lot of information passed on here that may not be first hand. I am not the owner of a lot backed onto a pond or lake so I really don't know if foul smell is really a problem with these beautiful lots. Maybe someone, in addition to Kitty, who lives on one of these properties could comment on whether these lots smell or not. Sometimes I think people pass along things they have heard but may not have actually experienced themselves. I know I have been guilty of that.

Kitty's comments about turnover are based on research thru the university of florida, IFAS. Except for: My personal experience of no smell in the small and wonderful Miss Kitty's Lake.

The reclaimed water does give off an odor. Florida also has as "odor" at times.
Lived in Winter Park for 8 years and going on 2 here. Odors come and go. No worse here than anywhere.
TOTV reported odors at Bonifay. We were away so emailed our neighbors. No one had a clue about any odors.
Now my new SUV does gives off an odor occasionally. Not good when driving friends. Either bad fuel or converter.

Speaking of smells.... the large mound of land behind the Sarasota Golf Practice facility is a dump for construction material like concrete and drywall but some sneak garbage in under their lumber. So on a real hot summer day when the wind is in the right direction you can smell the typical dump odor. Take a look on Google earth and you'll see the area. Some sales agents will disclose this but most won't.

Thanks everyone! A few of you had me laughing. Charleen my home watch lady saw this post and contacted me and said she does not smell anything at my house, so this is good news. Phew....

OP yes there is a sewer treatment center near Bonifay Country Club which is hidden behind nice landscaping and rolling hills. Perhaps, this is what you are smelling?

I'm the OP. I don't live on the water. I've lived here 3 months and the odor is present almost every day. It comes and goes, might be sprinkler water or pond odor but sometimes it is strong and other times it just floats by on the breeze. The smell is a cross between pond smell and sewer treatment so I don't know where to place the blame. I hope it is only seasonal because sometimes it can be pretty gross.

That's water storage, not sewage treatment. The sewage treatment plant is next to the Bacall exec course.

This could be something particular to where you live in Collier. Maybe you could give us a street or something to identify which area of Collier you are referring to. I have a number of friends who live in Collier and not one has mentioned any odor. I will see them tomorrow and ask them if they have noticed any problem. I often ride through Collier on my bicycle and I have never smelled any bad odors except when they water the Village landscaping or golf courses, but that has only been on the rare occasion when I was out very early in the morning. By the way, Collier is a beautiful Village and it has a great pool and the wonderful Eisenhower Recreation Center in it. The ride to Brownwood is a great trip too as you pass many large live oaks with all the Spanish moss hanging down from their branches.

I live on a lake in the lovely Village of St. James. Never ever have I noticed an odor coming from the pond...lake...ocean. :).

However, there was a terrible odor coming from my neighbors who loved to smoke in their lanai. I no longer have to put up with that disgusting odor now that my lanai is enclosed.

No odor from the lake....beautiful views and free entertainment watching all the birds. Priceless!
