Replacement of water heaters

Been here since 2006, and starting to hear noises in water heater (usually a sign, to think about replacing water heater) We have a gas water heater, and was wondering, if others had the same problem, and had to replace? Also who did you use to replace, and cost (about) of replacement. Ours is a 40 gal, and is sufficient for our home for two people. Thanks

We just replaced our 11 year old gas water heater. Work was done by Kiley and Sons plumbing who I highly recommend. Cost was between seven and eight hundred dollars. Peoples Gas currently has a $350 rebate offer which offsets almost half of the cost.

not knowing what type noise but most hot water tanks will emit some sort of noise in the heat cycle....kinda like boiling water nearest the heat sources.

Anytime after 10 years is good timing to keep an eye on their performance.

The last two I replaced were both over 13 years old and there was nothing wrong with either. I just wanted to be ahead of any potential problem.

Get the best deal you can on a heater then find someone to install it....I find is the best value.

Banging sound? Like pops when drawing water? Sounds like mine a few months ago. It is 7 yrs old. But noise doesn't automatically mean you need replacement.
My noise was caused by build up of crusty material in the tank. Gas tanks have a conical shape at the bottom, so debris collects in the low area and when the heat goes on, things start to bubble up. Thus the noise.
Fixed mine by draining the debris out....a lot cheaper than replacing one. :coolsmiley:
There are a couple of parts that are required to do this: R/R the drain with a ball fixture (allows bigger opening) and to do that requires a double threaded fitting. The folks at Home Depot or Lowe's should be able to help with the hardware.

Also, follow on/off directions in the warranty paperwork for the gas, and draining sequences. Research on-line too.

If uncomfortable with DIY, get a plumber to do it for you.

40 gallon water heaters are about $350 for a short tank at Lowes. With the $350 rebate from the gas company, your cost is zip except for sales tax. A couple fellows in the "upper North villages" charge $100 per install and $25 if you need it picked up at Lowes. They have done mine and six of my neighbors. The old tank is usually picked up that night by the metal recyclers.

That's great to know. Did you BUY your hot water heater through TECO or are you leasing it? We lease ours up in VT from Green Mt. Power and the cost is $11.50/mo...but, if anything happens to it, they come and take it away and replace with a new or rebuilt. It's a fifty or sixty gallon that we have now and it is electric.

Wow. That sounds pretty decent!!! I assume it was gas, being it's through TECO. Good info for others too. Might try to clean it out first as suggested, but if still makes noise, will go through TECO
