On Jan. 1 it will become illegal to manufacture or import traditional 60-watt and 40-watt incandescent bulbs, thanks to a 2007 bill that set strict minimum efficiency standards – and effectively outlawed the ordinary bulb.

General Info and Do's and Don'ts about CFL's:

Q: I don't want to buy any CFLs that are not made in the US. What brands are those?

A: There is only one CFL manufacturer, Lights of America, whose bulbs are assembled in the US. But many of their parts come from off-shore. All the major brands, Sylvania, GE, Philips, Maxlite,Westinghouse, TCP, Feit, Greenlite, Satco and Globe to name a few, have their bulbs made off-shore. In fact, most all of the products we buy or consume come from outside the US. Buying only CFLs with the Energy Star label assures you they have met very strict quality standards, regardless of their country of origin.

I went to Home Depot yesterday and bought $65 worth of bulbs. I think I'm set for life with bulbs and Tom thought I was crazy.

A six pack of incandescent 60 watt bulbs was $8. One 60 watt energy efficient bulb was $11. Nope, I'm not crazy!

I know they claim the new bulbs last longer, but its all about the money. Besides I dislike having to wait 5 minutes for the new bulbs to warm and get light.

I think the explosion of CFL light bulbs could very well turn into a nightmare. Yes, they last long and are less expensive to use. They do, however, contain mercury. To my knowledge, no one is recycling them and if you break one or better yet, there is no way they won't contaminate our landfills and wherever else they are thrown.

Yes, the "new' use of CFLs could be the opening of another Pandora's Box.

Three-way CFL bulbs cost upwards of $15 apiece, and we had our first three burn out either one of the light levels or else just plain break within the first month of use. A waste of money; then there's the hassle of disposing of them because of the mercury. I've put CFL's in lamps that don't use three ways, but until they come up with a CFL three way that works, it will be incandescents in those lamps. I'm all for trying to live green, even if it costs some more, but not when it wastes our money.

Dirty secret about CFL's are they don't last if it is a light your turn on and off a lot. If it is a light that stays on continuously then they last longer but not long enough to make it cost effective.

I also heard if you have dimmers the new bulbs will not dim. You will have to buy new dimmers for the energy efficient bulbs.

It does not surprise me at all your bulbs burnt out so quickly. I always suspected this was another money scam.
