Just had neighbors stop by to tell us to close our garage door because her golf cart was stolen from her DRIVEWAY minutes ago!

Go ahead and try to get my stuff and you'll be dead sorry.

Did your neighbor leave the keys in the cart?

I saw in The Daily Sun that a 19 year old had been picked up for stealing out of golf carts. He had taken a wallet plus a couple other things. Isn't leaving a wallet in your cart just plain foolish? Ditto for leaving keys in your cart - and leaving your garage door open.

Take normal precautions anywhere.

Hopefully, someone is playing a prank---if not---there is trouble in paradise!

Golf cart keys are all the same under each manufacturer. Leaving your keys in the ignition makes it much easier, but anyone can easily purchase a key for each manufacturer and take your cart.

Betty, what you say was true but now most golf carts are single keyed.

I'm assuming things may have changed in the last couple of years, but most aren't driving new carts.
It's as simple as going online and purchasing as many as you want for a couple of bucks. Replacement Golf Cart Keys from The Golf Car Catalog.com | Golfcarcatalog.com (http://www.golfcarcatalog.com/categories/Parts/Key-Switches-%26-Replacement-Keys/Replacement-Keys/)

Ok so the story is that the cart is a rental and the keys were left in the box because the owners were coming to pick the cart up this AM. They were literally gone for an hour. Police were here to take the report.

Just wondering aloud here.

Is it possible that the owners came and took the cart?

By "in the box", I assume you mean the beverage cooler. A cart thief probably is not going to see a cart in a driveway and check in the cooler for a key. The thief is most likely going to see if the key is in the ignition and, if not, move on.

Ask your neighbor if they checked with the owner. Please post what you find happened.

What street did this happen on?

I remember having a problem with my relatively new golf cart. I called The Villages Golf Cart store and they told me they would be coming to pick up my golf cart very early the next morning. They advised me to leave my keys in my golf cart. Yikes! No longer would I ever do that!

No because the owners came to look for the cart.

my golf car key is worth 5 cents and is not individually keyed, and I find all this theft stuff in Fernandina/Sanibel (4-5 incidents?) is likely the work of one group and bound to end with thugs in prison.

Mom and I rented a cart earlier this year when we were staying in that area. They told us to leave the cart outside with the keys in it when we left. They might have to change their policy.

If a thief is carrying around keys trying to steal a cart that way, I would think a remote well hidden kill switch would delay a thief and make him move on to the next cart.

...or released on bond.

if bond is posted, one still faces the charges, and these are likely to land criminals way past county jail.

From what we were just told, the rental company told another person that wanted to rent a cart from them to go ahead and pick this one up. Apparently he got the wrong address and picked up this cart by accident.

I am getting concerned about the incidents I'm hearing about
lately. What is going on?

It appears this was a misunderstanding and there was not a golf cart theft today.

Still, some good warning posts in this thread to be cautious.
