Is there anything we can do to make our front doors more sturdy
and safe so burglars cannot just come and kick in the front door?
Thanks!

From what I understand, the doors are holding up well. It is the frames that are being broken and allowing entry. Not sure what can be done about that. For the doors, you could always get metal but not sure what you could do about the frames.

When we had our new door installed in our Indiana Home the contractor used extra long screws to attach the framing. He said that would make the frame stronger. Maybe you can change out the screws for something longer/stronger?

There are lots of things you can have installed to stop a door from being kicked in.

If you are worried about break-ins, the best idea is a home alarm system. Cost is around $45 per month for monitoring.
No intruder is going to stay around when a 110db siren is sounding.

I agree. This is money well spent.

Most homes opt for the aethetics when designing/choosing doors/hardware. The entry points can be "hardened at the time of construction very easily.
I continue to be amazed at the small number of homes in TV that have security systems. The type of construction, plus no security system plus absent snow birds/owners = easy pickings for the criminal thinking/acting crowd.
I have a small sticker on our front door that states....don't worry about the dog....worry about the owner....shows a picture of a man with a gun.....!

Unfortunately, this style reinforcement relies on a solid wall for its strength. Most of us have decorative glass inserts in the wall, and the wood frame is not strong enough for the metal strip to resist the impact.

Breaking a window to get in is very easy. Thus locks do nothing to protect you from a criminal.

Of course. Duh!
So the perps who are kicking in the doors are just trying to spare the homeowner from having to replace the broken glass. Nice touch.

A 19-year-old Wildwood man is facing charges after he allegedly took items from golf carts parked outside Beef OBradys at Southern Trace shopping plaza.
Brandown Crawford is charged with two counts of petit theft and one count of burglary of a conveyance.
Major Gary Brannen of the Sumter County Sheriffs Office was on patrol in the parking lot when he observed Crawford at a nearby Dumpster at about 4 p.m. Monday. Crawford is believed to have taken money from a wallet from one golf cart and sunglasses from another golf cart.
Crawford attempted to return the wallet (without the money) to the golf cart, said Lt. Bobby Caruthers of the Sumter County Sheriffs Office.
The golf cart owners were in Beef OBradys and unaware that items had been taken from their golf carts.
Crawford was already on probation and awaiting sentencing on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, Caruthers added.

Are we to interpret your statement to mean you don't believe it is worthwhile to use an alarm system?

Interpet anyway you choose, but We once had alarm system mal-function in Fl-home at 7am with outdoor siren sounding and not one neighbor came to see why, that was in Sarasota home.

I think that security systems with cameras too are the best.
BUT, I think these people who have been breaking in will be caught due to one of us seeing something and saying something. If you see something or someone out of place in your neighborhood, like younger people who are usually not there (after holiday break) or someone walking around who doesn't look like a typical walker or even someone who looks out of place.... Pay attention, ask them if you can help them and if you don't feel right call Law Enforcement.
HOWEVER. I have tried to call the non emergency number for the villages part of Sumter County Sheriffs department twice in the last hour to ask them about the recent break in's south of 466A and it goes to voicemail. So does someone have a better number that isn't 911 to call when it looks suspicious????

Many homes have tiffany /glass insets and sidelights at their entrances. I suppose you can replace them with metal doors and reinforced jams but then the thief will go through a widow or screen. So we can add bars to all our windows and around our lanai's but then the thief will go through a skylight. so we can remove our skylights. We can add an alarm system but then it would take cops 20 minutes to arrive after the alarm goes off if any one shows up at all. Or we can just stand guard with gun in hand waiting for one of those punks to act so that he will make your day.
I prefer a stop and frisk policy but new York has been asked to step down on that policy

Almost all doors in The Villages have an internal latch, rather than an internal key, to release the dead bolt from the inside and have windows at dead-bolt level. Therefore, only a dumb thief kicks in a door. It is faster and quieter to break out the window, release the dead bolt, and walk in.
Installing a double-sided-key dead bolt, with long screws in the latch plate, will provide some extra protection, but in the end, if a thief wants to break into your house, he can do it.

I was hoping to not interpret it. I was just seeking some clarification.
But thanks for commenting on your rationale.

Only a guess, but perhaps the admin (non-emergency) side of the Sheriff's office is only open M-F?
And, if it looks suspicious, it just might be considered an emergency.

We definitely will be putting in an alarm system.
In our current house we also added glass breaks so if someone
breaks a window or sliding glass door the alarm goes off.

Yeah...seems this "rash" happens every couple years, mostly folks who work here have been the perps, but maybe this is a way to increase sales of alarms :)
New areas always open to this..past, present and sadly..future.

The new systems have cameras all over the inside of the home and outside too. I think it is a great way to catch those critters, because it shows how they get there too.

Although this video is primarily about Home Invasions it contains some good information about home security measures (locks, alarms and video systems) as well.
It is well worth the seven minutes viewing time. The presenter, Massad Ayoob, has been a highly regarded self defense expert for decades.

The problem with alarm systems is that the bad guys are in and out in a flash -- well before the cops arrive. Our front doors are not strong because they have side panel(s) that cannot withstand any kind of force. Wrought iron grille work in an entry is probably the only thing they can't break through, however, if they really want to get in, they will go to a window or sliding door.

With an external alarm (which can be heard for blocks)............the bad "boys" may decide not to enter (in an effort of getting maybe $500 of old people stuff). :1rotfl::1rotfl:
