View Full Version : Tip newspaper deliverers, mail station workers?

I have received friendly holiday cards and fliers from various service people, like my newspaper delivery guy and the girl who delivers mail to our mail station mailbox, etc.

They don't overtly ask for tips but I'm sure this is the intent. I'm curious how many of you always tip these folks and how much you tip. Now that Christmas is over, I'm getting New Years fliers as well. What do you do?

There was a thread about this before Christmas. I'm sure someone will attach a link. Basically, the consensus was to tip at least $20.00 to each of them (the mail carrier is not a federal employee but a sub-subcontractor and frequently gets less than minimum wage because of having to bid for the job). So, I'd happily tip them and wish them a very happy New Year.

I also tipped both $20.00. Probably no different that your Barber/Hairdresser, Waiter, or other person who does a service for us.

Happy New Year!

p.s. To redwitch... See Dee, there are moments when I am all right... few... but they do exist just like Santa Clause! :1rotfl:

Yes, we tip $20 for both mail and paper delivery but not New Years. Question? Do you tip more than 20 o/o to waiters? I try if service deserves it. We also give something during Christmas as a guys golf group to people who served us well the whole year. We have one in Mallory since we know the current minimum wage is dismal all around. It hasn't changed since I was a bus boy in late 50s and extra tip was really appreciated when I became a waiter during the summer employment.

I used to tip my paperboy up North $1.00 a week and $20.00 for Christmas. This really isn`t that much for service every day.

We tip the newspaper person $40 (they are up in the wee hours of the morning). Mail person use to get a Christmas tip until she bent mass cards that were mailed to me. She later put 2 bins of overflowing vacation mail in the top locker. How nice of her. I doubt that all the lower lockers were full. After that I mailed an outgoing letter and as the chute closed, I heard from inside "you don't have to slam it". She is just so pleasant.

For those of us who do tip, do you give cash? We usually have given a gift card to Publix or Sweetbay. Do you think that is appropriate?

I think most appreciate cash more but appreciate any gift given. I'd really hesitate on a Sweet Bay gift card -- not that many around here except in TV.

I tip as well. Usually do a gift card to Subway. We also do the same for the trash collectors, but they haven't gotten theirs yet, as they have been coming at 5:45am for the past few weeks.

We tipped our 2 postal employees and our newspaper delivery man $20 each. My hairdresser also got an extra $20 and the 2 shampoo girls an extra $10. We doubled our cleaning ladies charges and also my nail tech's charges.
