Facebook faces suit over private messages

I find it a little disturbing.

Two Facebook users are taking the company to court over claims it mines private messages for data that is then sold to third parties.

How many people review the privacy policies regularly for major policy changes?

Frequent changes to Facebook's privacy settings have also angered some users. In addition, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made controversial statements about how people shouldn't be doing the things they want to keep secret in the first place.

I joined the Facebook community a couple of years ago. I was on a short time and someone I didn't know, sent me a friend request. Somehow, that alarmed me, so I disenrolled.

Being a former techie, I know how easy it is to gain someone's personal information, and one's life can be compromised. I didn't think the benefit, outweighed the risk. IMHO

I have to wonder if their security settings are really secure?

I think there are dangers on online forums, but not the ones most people think about. Several young friends of our grandchildren were too sharing of their good times in college and some not great language, all read by prospective employers.


When you put yourself out there, the world reads it.


I don't like Facebook as much as this forum. (PLEASE Don't hurt my feelers, I know I post too much) but this forum is made up of peers. I love that.


Even if we have strong opinions and don't always agree, I still feel the kinship and find it easier to understand some of the jabs. Not everyone is happy or feeling well sometimes and they believe in their views sincerely and honestly, even if they differ from mine.

I used the example of that idiot PR person who posted something outrageous about getting aids in South Africa and then lost her big time job due to her stupidity, to drum it into my granddaughter's heads to stay away from social media sites. I don't suppose it will work, but I hope so.

Unfortunately face book seems to be the next means of communication and I, personally, would rather be out of touch than in touch with face book.

I belong to Facebook but not in a manner that anyone will ever find me. I post nothing personal and my name there is fictitious. (Yes, I know, I'm supposed to use my real name but what are they going to do, shoot me?) I do use it to contact a few very special people and they are the only ones who know how to find me on any social media.

The idea of being constantly monitored, that every word I say is being mined frightens me to no end. Unlike Nazi Germany, people no longer have to report their neighbors -- we report ourselves. I wish we could convince our kids and grandkids just how dangerous social medias can be, not just for stolen identities but for stalkers and their ilk.

I found that Facebook followed my every step on the internet. I put a block on Facebook using cookies on me. They tell me that I am not allowed to log in anymore because I don't allow them to use cookies. That's fine with me. I would warn everybody about putting any true personal data on their site. i.e birthday, address etc.
