Default Confused about foreclosures

Is there some simple way to get details about properties listed as foreclosed and pre-foreclosed other than subscribing to Realty Trac or another paid service? One would think banks and mortgage companies would be eager to make it easy for potential buyers to see specfics through MLS sites such as Truila. What's the deal with them?
