I don't know what I was thinking. But the look you describe is exactly what I want.

The house we bought already had plantation shutters for the front windows. I just took a closer look at those and the slats are like yours. I like them. I also like the bottom/top separate adjustment you describe. My front shutters do not have that. But that works OK there because there is an arch above that lets in light.

I have been staring at those windows on either side of the television since we moved in and now, because of the nice answers in this thread, I finally know what to do.
