Default Greens in pristine condition

Played yesterday at Silver Springs Shores golf club southeast of Ocala. The clubhouse is old and nothing special, the fairways are ok for this time of year, the cart paths looked like they had been through a carpet bombing, but the greens were absolutely perfect and I mean every square inch of them. The round took 4 hours 45 minutes which was brutal (waiting every shot sometimes 7-10 minutes). $35 green fee but after 12 it dropped to $30. Wow those greens though

I played there on a golf trip once, prior to moving to TV. The conditions were as described above; however the pin positions on both #9 and #18 were ridiculous...decided to never go back.

Please don't spread the word about SSS. I love the lack of a crowd and the afternoon prices. Unlike The Villages courses, a great Desmond Muirhead design with greens that put any Village greens to shame at this time of year. The Villages should hire their greenskeeper. Maybe then the Villages courses would be worth $64.

They have a great Sunday cash game. I agree please don't go to SSS. Stay in the Villages and pay $47 for garbage.

For some reason, Silver Springs Shores never gets mentioned here on TOTV. Maybe I can talk with the guys into going there, $64 a round gets old after awhile, $30 sounds good.

Here's some more info I found:

It looks like it's not far from Market of Marion, so if anyone is familiar with that location, it wouldn't be hard to find.

Google Maps

Their website has a lot of info:

Home - The Country Club at Silver

The photos on the internet look nice, maybe they were taken during the rainy season when the grass was green and better shape.

I haven’t played baseline in 15 years but it was plush just a little wierd. Par 4s and 3s and an extra hole that was called lucky 13 if I remember correctly so 19 holes. It was an island green and looked like the one in your picture.

There isn’t an $84 course in The Villages. I’ve had guests in once and was truly embarrassed by the course conditions and price. It’s a shame when you’re too embarrassed by your courses to invite guests.

It's fun to just hack around, but there are no reservations, no starters or ambassadors, and it's not a 'rated' course. So, take that in stride. Other than that, it's okay, but has beautiful landscaping!

And it's BYOC (Bring Your Own Cart). With all the loaded tee times and the minimal conditions, I'm sure the champ courses here are profiting nicely at this time of year. I guess it is better than shoveling snow for most people.

Check out Oak Run. Ocala, Rt484 & 200. Tee boxes, fairways and greens pristine. $36.00 after 11:00 $39.00 before 11:00, I think. Worth a try. 1/2 what they charge here in The Villages.

2nd Silver Springs Shores...Just a much better place all around than anything in The Villages. The course is great, the greens are great, and the bartenders are all great. Go there on a Tuesday to test your game in the Skins game if you are looking for a test very high quality game.
