Please check out the recent posts under financial planning and retirement. I've copied my comments from that thread below. I'd prefer to consider a financial planning club rather than just investments, as many people focus on their investments and don't pay enough attention to the other aspects of financial planning, such as estate, tax and insurance issues. Investments also scare off many people, as I've found out over 20+ years as a CFP practitioner.
Let me know what everyone thinks about this

There are several ways to work with financial institutions, as well as fee/commission arrangements, depending on how involved you want to get (no such thing as one size fits all!).
I am a Certified Financial Planner (not looking for clients or work!) who's worked for a major financial services firm and just retired. I've transferred my NY membership in the Financial Planning Association to the Florida region and will be very active with them when we move to TV on 12/28. I've also provided financial planning seminars on the entire east coast, so love financial education and sharing what I have learned. I'd love to help start a financial club when we get to TV.
I will go through my files and post some informational links for everyone to access (none affiliated with any company, all educational). As I am on my way out for the rest of today, I'll post a full page by tomorrow afternoon, but for now begin with this one, which is the best (you'll know this if you've read Jonathan Clements columns in the Wall St. Journal:

stay tuned for more...

I noticed on the college catalog for The Villages Lifelong Learning College http://thevillageslifelongcollege.com/ under the fall and winter classes 2008 that they had some classes in finance that included investing. There are a lot of resources at TV.

Yesterday I posted a link that is considered the bible for information on financial planning and finding a qualified advisor. I have numerous more resources I can share, but have not gotten any feedback on what the readers thought of the first link.
:dontknow:
Any comments?

I was unfamiliar with the website previously. Found it to be helpful. There is so much to learn. At our stage in life, I believe information on estate planning would be beneficial.

I agree - if we start the club in 2008 that should be a topic on our agenda. Thanks for the feedback - I'll be posting more info over the next few days.

Some of us are looking into it now -
wondering how many would be interested in an educational format (no sales reps, etc.)

Count me in Trav. I think this would be a great idea. We've talked about it in the chat room recently, but what do we need to get this started. I know a lot of the "chat packers" were interested, so let's discuss this next week when we're all in TV together and maybe we can get this started. I, for one, am very excited about learning more and am a novice at financial planning as I left it up to hubby but now I'm on my own so I must take charge.!!

Should we also put this post under Fem Forum? I think a lot of sistah's are interested but they prob don't look under clubs topics. What do you think?

Please count me in on any financial planning/investment club if anyone is compiling a list of prospective members; I don't know yet when I'll land in TV but when I do, I have much to learn about that topic
