What is the best way to connect the iPad to the TV to watch Netflix streaming?

Good question.... You can use the Apple Digital AV Adapter to connect the iPad2 to your HDTV via HDMI cabling. No special app required; just the adapter and an HDMI cable.

Read about it here: http://www.apple.com/ipad/accessories/

Enjoy!

PS: This assumes that you don't already have Apple TV

It's that time of the year

With hurricane season upon us again, I thought I would remind everyone there are some rather good apps for hurricane tracking, in the Apple app store.

I have been using Hurricane HD, on the iPad and iPhone for a couple years and it works really well. Shows storm tracks, both actual and projected for both Atlantic and Pacific storms. Also shows how far you are from the storm, calibrated to your current location.

This thread has been dormant for a while and lots of folks have gotten a new iPhone or iPad.

What are the latest apps you're using ???

CarGuys 05-23-2012 11:49 PM

While not an iPad club, there is a Villages Mac Users Group that meets several times/month. On the 2nd Tuesday of each month, there is a meeting to focus on iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) and the issues that folks are having. They answer lots of questions. Here is a link to their website:

Apple iClub | The Villages, Florida

The meetings are open to everyone.

Nobody has mentioned WAZE. It is a fun app I use on my droid AND Ipad2 that works the same as a gps navigation app. The difference is it has options for having groups (exa; people that might travel the same route to work everyday), friends, you can send messages to wazers on the traffic or whatever, points for your travels, and input on traffic delays, police reporting, accidents, and much more that is put in by the users as they travel for all to use. Plus it is just fun to pass someone that also has it on since they show up on the road with you.

Whistle

Are you calling any US phone or just other Whistle users?
It seems things may have changed. I have a friend who is now living in Tokyo. We each have an iPhone and would love to be able to call each other. Suggestions?

Cheers..... Mike

First Whistle... I haven't used Whistle in a couple years, but when I did use it, you could call ANY US telephone free; even cell phones. Your friend, in Tokyo, could install Whistle and call you for free. The app works on both the iPhone and the iPad.

Caveat: You can only call US Phones for free. In other words, you would not be able to call your friends Japanese phone number. So, only he can initiate a free Whistle call from Tokyo.

But wait... You both have iPhones! Well, if you each have an iPhone 4 or 4S, you can use Facetime to talk, for free, anywhere in the world. ..and, you can use the cameras to actually see each other or he can take you on a tour of Tokyo. This is a amazing benefit of Apple and iOS 5. It's like Skype, only better, in my opinion. With Facetime, you can initiate the call, as well as your friend. It's free either way.

In addition, you can each use iMessage to text each other; also free. I have friends and family in Germany [with iPhones] and we use iMessage daily to "talk" to each other.

Hope this helps.... Mike

TapATalk HD for TOTV/forum browsing

Someone asked a tekkie question a while back on TOTV about using the TapATalk app to browse TOTV (and other PHP forum sites). Didn't pay it much mind at the time but decided to look into it.

It's "expensive" for an app ($4.99 for the iPad version) but is an efficient and slick way to present forum updates. Much faster way to browse through new postings without having to do a lot of extra clicking and hitting 'back' button.

It took a little tinkering to figure it all out but for those who have ipads and consume all TOTV content, it's pretty cool.

There is a $2.99 version for the iphone platform...no first hand experience with it.

Happy app'ing!!!

Bento database/organizer

Bento 4 ... a pretty full featured database/organizer app is "on sale" through July 31. Regular price is 9.99, on sale for 4.99

I'm just starting to scratch the surface but it looks pretty robust. This is something for all the old dbase, foxpro, etc database types to tinker with.

check it out...

iOS 6 released today!

Apple is releasing it's new iOS 6 today and will be available of downloading. It is a free upgrade and will include lots of new features. This update gets turn-by-turn, voice navigation and facetime over 3G/4G, among other updates...

I believe the release time is 1:00 eastern....

Folks with the iPhone 3G or the original iPad will not be able to upgrade. You need, at least, the iPhone 3GS or the iPad 2.

Cheers!

My answer is yes! If you can afford the extra cost of the 3G device, I always recommend purchasinga 3G capable device. You can not add this feature later.
you pay for your data monthly so it is something you can turn off and on as your needs dictate.

I use my iPad A LOT when we travel. The cost of the data plan is well with the value we gain. That said, if you are the driver or if you are really a stay at home person than a wifi only device should be enough.

I have taught new user classes in the past and haven't heard of anyone unhappy with the decision to purchase the broadband capable device.

You can track any flight in detail, (e.g. Time left, Time of arrival, how
far the flight has traveled, how far to go, altitude, speed, gate of
departure, gate of arrival, % on time, % late by 15 min., etc.etc.)
It will also show a map of the flight path and where the plane is at that
time.

One of my favorite apps is called "FlightAware" and it is free. Track flights be flight number, plane tail number or do a search by flight route. It even shows Airport activity and Airport delays. FlightAware has a feature called "Nearby Me" that shows active aircraft traffic above you and you can click on a plane to get it's flight info.

Device: iPhone
Cost: $0.00
App: Shazam
Comments: This was one of my first apps and I believe one of the most amazing. The apps will "listen" to any music source (Radio, CD, TV, your humming, etc.) and will identify the artist and song. Once identified, you are normally presented with options to purchase from iTunes or many times, you can watch a YouTube video of the song.

Actually, Shazam does not do "your humming." Wish it did. It only does commercially recorded music

Easy IPHONE Apps

I went on my pc to youtube. searched IPHONE apps. It walked me right through all apps so much easier.

I finally found an iphone app I truly love. It is Vivino. The app is $4.95 but works great. Take a picture of a wine bottle label and it will scan it and tell you everything about the wine. Where it is produced, average price, where to buy, rank in all markets, description, region, grape, who has rated it, + +. It will allow you to add personal tasting notes that others can read. You can also use it to search a wine name and vintage and it will provide the same information. The only issue so far is that it will sometimes not read the vintage correctly when it scans the label picture. But it allows you to correct that.

Google Maps for iOS 6

Google has finally released a new app to replace the missing Google Maps in iOS6.

As expected, the new app has turn-by-turn navigation and looks pretty darn good.

You can download this now app by going to the app store and searching for Google Maps.

Cheers.....Mike

Search for "Google Maps" in the App Store - iPhone section.

It is an iPhone app NOT an iPad app. It is not optimized for the iPad but it does work on an iPad with IOS 5 and IOS 6.

pretty much any app on the iPad will leave you satisfied.. just thinking out loud!

How about Foursquare...

I have an app called Foursquare. It's pretty much a social app, where you "check in" at various locations, like restaurants, golf courses, bars, etc... It's similar to Facebook, in that if your friends have the app and friend you, you can each see where the other person is checking in.

Here's the good part... lots of restaurants or other retail establishments are a part of this app, so when you check in at one of their locations, you might receive a special...like a free drink or appetizer, etc.

For example, Havana Country Club has a special of free nachos with an entree. Regular price for nachos is $8.99. We were there with a large group last Friday and several of us had this app. We were able to get 5 nachos for the large table, free. In the past, Havana has had free drinks with an entree.

We have received lots of special pricing at the Millennia Mall in Orlando by just searching for specials in the area.

Enjoy....

I just got " Around me". I will be using it on my trip to TV which I will be leaving for within 24 hours. It show restaurants, ATM, hotels, banks. anything like that.

Turns your iPad or iPhone into a tv remote at all hotels and motels

Very cool because remotes in hotels and motels are the worst for germs.

Plumb line (I actually striped a whole wall using my phone as a plumb line)
Torch (a flashlight - I used it to find my way to my real flashlight during a power outage)
Old Booth - hysterically funny
House of mice
HBO to go

Paint harmony app ..visualize new colors on your walls

New free app in apple App Store. Paint Harmony

Take a photo of a room in your house (may work outside too), tap on a wall, and paint it a new color from a ton of commercial pbrand sample paint colors. Really cool how it paints the wall only and not furniture, wall decor, ceiling,, etc.

If your iPad has a camera, it goes right from take a pic to paint the wall, all integrated in the app.

Just got it so still experimenting.

Pretty cool stuff.

Since it's Tornado Season

In light of the devastating tornado that ravaged Moore, Ok., I decided to look for apps that warned of tornados. I found an app by The Red Cross, which seems to be very good, called tornado.

You setup the app to "follow you", as well as have a home location. It will send an alert and a sound a siren tone, should there be a tornado warning in your area. I find this especially helpful, if you are traveling and there happens to be a tornado warning in the area you are driving or staying.

This is a FREE APP for iPhone and Android, so I recommend everyone download and install this app.

Using the App store or Google Play, search for TORNADO and download the free Red Cross App.

FYI: The Red Cross has several other apps for Wildfires, Hurricanes, etc. So you might want to check those out too. All are free.
