If the data on the external drive is in a compressed backup file, viewing the data is more complicated. You cannot just plug it into a usb port. You need to unlock and uncompress the backup file.

If you have plugged the drive into a USB port and nothing happens, it could be the controller on the drive. A very common issue with Seagate drives. Just crack open the drive using a small flathead screwdriver. Buy a controller and plug it in. I've done this successfully dozens of times.
