Pop up valves I bought at Lowe’s after we moved in.

At our Indiana condo, we've been taking the grate openings and opening up a number of the cross pieces to create larger openings. This makes leaves washing off the roof and into the buried downspout "wash" out through the enlarged grate openings.

They were fine for years until the debris built up with nowhere to go; so, had them disconnected.

When we had our landscaping done recently, my husband wanted French drains (buried) with popups put in and the landscaper did that for us. Of course, we have a huge drain in the street in front of our house where the water goes. Our yard also slopes slightly to the street. It's the best thing we've ever done! No more unsightly downspouts or extensions. Prior to the French drains, my husband had about an 8 ft gutter extension from the downspout out toward the street (white) to get the water away from the house and I absolutely HATED looking at that thing every day. Now both are buried underground with the popups between the house and the street. Well worth the money spent!! We used Sharp Lawn and Landscape and I think the charge for us was about $300 for labor and materials.

Default Pop-ups

I didn't want the potential for clogging etc. so we added gutters to get the drains off the driveway and the landscaped area to the sides of the house. A little more expensive than having landscapers put in the underground drains.
