Default Buyer Beware Phillips Toyota (Leesburg FL)—the end of the story!

For anyone not familiar with this, do a search of “Buyer Beware Phillips Toyota” for a few earlier postings. This started over a year ago, and the first posting got over 9,400 hits. Thank you all!

We dealt with the dealership, then with US Toyota Corporation in Plano TX, and finally with Toyota Motor Company in Tokyo. The very top of the chain of command is—the dealership! There is no one at any other level in the company’s management structure that is above the level of the dealership (who seem to be the true Governing Board of Toyota Motor Company). If buyers are unhappy with something the dealership does, it’s easy to tell them to file a complaint with ‘Corporate,’ which is useless. The dealership can commit something awful, and there is no one in the company who can tell them to clean it up. Of course, it is the dealership that generates the income to support the structures in Texas and Tokyo. Follow the money. . . .

We took it as a promise—our mistake—that we would be given a 2017 or 2018 RAV4 with the same features as we had on our 2016 RAV4, minus the hybrid function, and that is not what we were given. We didn’t realize how many of the safety features were missing that we had in the 2016 RAV4 that we bought from them a year and a half earlier that had an electrical problem that they couldn’t diagnose and repair. (It’s all explained in the earlier threads.) We were told by the dealership that we could have all those safety features again, as we had paid for in our original car, but WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM A SECOND TIME! For us it was a principle; now we know better in terms of the car dealership.

So we got rid of a perfectly competent 2018 RAV4—but lacking several safety features that we had specifically bought with our original car—by trading it in for a new car that has the safety features that we find important. Did we pay for those safety features? Well, of course—but we’re no longer the Toyota family that we were for many decades, and eventually our extended family as well. Toyota does not need us.
