I am an HVAC contractor and can tell you that all of the furnaces/heat pumps should have a filter on the return air side of the unit. If you install additional filters at the return grilles, you must then eliminate the one at the furnace/heat pump. You should not have "double" filtration as the systems are designed to handle a certain amount of static pressure or friction within the ductwork. Adding a second filter will cause too much restriction and could cause problems of insufficient air through the unit. I would only suggest duct cleaning on very old systems or ones that have been run without a filter for a period of time.

I have been thinking of having our ductwork and dryer vent cleaned to see if that would help. We didn't need it in our last home (Glenview area) as the builder had it done before we took ownership. This builder (Sabal Chase area) was fired before we bought so don't know what was done for sure. We've been in this house for 3+ years and it hasn't gotten any better. Has anyone had this done? Who did you use? Would you recommend them? Did it help with dust inside? Thanks for any input.

Do you keep your windows open and doors to lanai open alot? We live in the Northeast and have a lot of pollen. Because of that I have to keep all windows closed and keep the air conditioning on during the heavy pollen season. I also have special filters for the furnace. I have never had the duct work cleaned. I notice however after pollen season when I open up the windows and patio doors I have a lot more dusting to do. Could it be that you just have windows and doors open?

I'd try to identify what type of dust you have before spending money on duct cleaning. Gather up some dust fibers and put in clean zip lock bag. Gather up some carpet fibers into another clean zip lock bag. Same deal with lint off the dryer filter screen. Any other obvious sources of dust, collect in the same manner.

Now, go find you a microscope in a Dr office, dental office, library, or somewhere and it's really easy to accurately determine where the dust is coming from then fix that.

My bet is your house has wall to wall carpeting (like ours and we have given up on dusting so frequently plus the table tops are great to write notes and smiley faces on).

Mhy doctor and dentist would never let me use his equipment -- especially to look at dirt

I recently had my ducts and dryer vent cleaned in my home due to my husband's allergies. After going through several companies with prices ranging from $300-900. I googled on the net and found a company name k&m air duct cleaning. The owner explained the process over the phone and quoted me a fair price. Immediately I scheduled an appointment for them to come out it was the best choice i ever made. My husband is no longer waken up coughing or sneezing.
