We have Sunshine check the A/C twice a year as part of the support contract. We change it when they say it needs to be changed. I think they last for about a year so we should be due for a change on our next service check.

It is recommended to change the UV bulb annually as the UV radiant ability degrades over time.
I do the one we have, it is pretty straight forward. Just remember to not touch the glass portion of the new bulb. Finger prints cause an unwanted focal point. |

I've never heard of this UV light. Where is it and what does it do? How would I change it myself if needed?

The UV bulb is in your air handler. It kills mold, bacteria, and viruses.

Re: Uv light and where it is

and it is supposed to kill germs. For details, I would look it up on the internet. I expect, like a florescent bulb the light drops off over time. Most of us don't notice the loss of light from a florescent bulb because it is gradual. A UV bulb you can only see part of the light, only the visible light, so they tell you to replace it after a year. |

The UV bulb used in A/C's produces much, much more UV than the kind of florescent bulbs used to grow plants. In fact you cannot use one of these A/C UV bulbs in the open, it is dangerous can can blind people.

This UV bulb thing sounds like another way for me to save money by not buying it.

I'm in a 5 year old patio villa. How can I find out if my system has one. Specifically, where do I look?

You will see a 4-6 inch plastic or metal box mounted on the outside of your air handling unit near the evaporator coil, and it will have a power cord attached to it. The bulb is replaced by sliding out a long light tube from the box. The purpose of the UV light is to prevent mold from growing on the evaporator coil inside your unit. This is on the A/C unit located inside your house or in the garage. The evaporator coil is located where the 2 copper pipes connect to the unit.
