Default Poporn Ceiling Removal Help

Anybody have any experience with getting rid of a popcorn ceiling in The Villages? It's an older home, we're looking to make the ceiling either smoothed or textured, but not popcorn.
I hear you can sand or spray(?) it?

I will only add that if you are already living in the house, learn to love popcorn. Removal is a huge mess.

I removed popcorn in a 1950's So Cal house I owned. There was, surprisingly, no asbestos in it, but that can be a concern based on age of home.

I used a pump 1-gallon spray bottle with wand and sprayed the ceiling well. Then used a 12-inch tape knife (drywall section of your local hardware store), and a ladder and just scraped it off like scraping stickers off a car window.

I would HIGHLY recommend you empty the house and replace the floor after. All mine fell on carpet I was replacing anyhow. It did make the carpet VERY heavy.

Secondly, be prepared to prime and paint the ceilings afterward. Hope there are no cracks or water stains lurking beneath the popcorn. Recommend a paint sprayer and not a roller to paint the ceilings quickly and evenly.

Ambitious do-it-yourself project, but no special skills necessary.

Let us know how it goes!

I decided it wasn't worth the cost. I really don't notice it anymore.
