Any recommendations on a reputable company to install a residential lightning protection system? Have had a couple of close hits in the last couple of weeks and want to protect what we have a little better. Thanks for the info.

If you are referring to a motion sensitive light I bought mine at Costco and had the electrician put it in. I had to be careful not to have the light shine into my neighbors windows etc.

As I recall, lightning strikes are not random. They seek negative charges coming from the earth. I have rods after nearby strikes and have not been hit directly by lightning. However, a flag pole about 50 feet from the house was hit. The pole conducted the current to the ground and then to the Comcast cable and then to the house and from the Comcast cable to the cable box. I could actually see the grass burn marks on the grass to the comcast cable. The cable and the cable box had to be replaced. I have also seen damage caused by electrical surges due to local strikes. My first incident was a surge that caused the phones, a computer modem, garage door controller, a furnace control board, and an irrigation controller to be damaged.

I have added whole house surge protection at the electrical box to supplement the Lightning rods. Also have bought unit surge protectors for all items that have micro electronics connected to power. Still likely susceptible to surges that might come from water line, cable line, gas line,and telephone lines.


Final protection is insurance.

We used A-1 Lightning about six years ago to install ours as did many of our neighbors. I watched them do the install, and they did an excellent job. The system needs a physical re-inspection every five years or so to make sure none of the connections have loosened up. We just had ours, and everything was tight. They can tell by measuring the resistance to the ground.

Danny's meticulous in making sure everything is up to spec'.

The chances of a house being struck by lightning, in fact, are random, whether you have lightning rods or not. The difference is that lightning hitting a house with lightning rods is much less likely to damage the house than a one without lightning rods. Lightning rods are not a 100% guarantee lighting will not cause damage to your home, but they make the likelihood much lower.

But even here in central Florida, the chances of lightning striking of your house is pretty low and if it does happen insurance will cover most of the cost of repair. And even when lightning strikes a home it may do little or no damage. That happened to our house in Massachusetts and a friend's house in Maine.

So I don't think lightning rods make sense if all you want to protect against is the cost of repairing lightning damage.

The thing insurance won't make up for is lost time or the trauma of having lightning damage to your home. That's the reason we added them. We don't feel we have all that many years left, and we want to minimize the probability that we will spend months or longer fixing or replacing our home.

Some recent statistics of houses damaged by lightning would suggest your chances of a damaging lightning strike is about 1 in 60,000 in any given year.
