A CPA is Licensed by the States and with some very old exceptions, one requires a degree, and most States require 5 years of College today. While a CPA is not an officer of the court, he/she may represent a client before the IRS. An Enrolled Agent (with the IRS) does not require a college degree but must pass tests to practice before the IRS. A lot of misinformation on this thread.

Thanks. One question. I cannot find anything on the Florida website that requires a CPA to have a college degree. There are education requirements, but not specifically a degree requirement. Am I missing something?

Excellent local CPA

For more than a decade I have used Bill O'Brian, Hartman and O'Brian. He is local (Lady Lake) and has always done an excellent job. We have two companies as well as our personal tax returns and he has always been more than sufficient. Phone number is 352-750-6326.

Florida requires a five year degree. Being an old timer coming from NY I was required to have a four year degree in accounting and work for a cpa firm for three years,

The five year degree has no work requirement. So a Florida CPA can practice without having done an audit or a tax return.

With the major shortage of accountants many states are considering going back to a four year degree and requiring 1 year with a CPA.

Want a great job? a forensic accountant CPA is in great demand as an independent accounting investigator . .
a FL CPA friend would be excellent, except he is afraid to put out his own shingle, as well as he is very financially
set not having kids. . .

Yes, changed. Calculator and Excel now allowed.

Also, allowed to take one part at a time at a testing center virtually year around.

My husband is a practicing CPA in business for over 40 years. A college degree is definitely a requirement to sit for the CPA exam. When he sat for it the requirement was a 4 yr degree. Now a 5th year is required.
