We need more info, I have a Sears water softener and whole house filter requiring little to no maintenance except for adding salt. You can get a home water test kit that will give you readings on how soft the water is, etc. Some other brands have filters to be changes or use another chemical or process to soften the water. There should be a label on the unit with the make or model, this would help a lot. If there is no identifying info, take a good picture and post it with your reply and maybe someone can identify the unit. You should be able to download an owners manual from the manufacturers website that will answer all of your questions.

I bought a house with one and company that sold and installed it was on water softener. Was told needs to be serviced once a year - $129 or $139. I just add salt. They clean it and make sure program is correct for everything. Not a big cost to have the softer water. Like it a lot.
