The greatest fiction in the news media today is about the “mainstream media” and how liberal it is. That notion is a pure myth, but it plays like David vs. Goliath situation, and so it is perpetuated.
Fox News is as much a part of the mainstream media as any other. It’s been around for almost 30 years, and has led cable ratings for over 20 consecutive years. Their audience is roughly equal to, and in some years bigger than, CNN and MSNBC combined. Fox News is the cable news Goliath, not vice-versa. And while much smaller, Newmax and OAN are out there for those who are even farther to the right of Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters.
Add to that the dominance of online media (Fox News, Breitbart, Epoch Times, Daily Caller, Washington Examiner, and many others). The left does not approach this in online unique visitors.
The place where conservative media absolutely dominates is talk radio. Rush Limbaugh was the king while he was living, but talk radio is still dominated by the right. There are many right wing talk radio programs, but you would be hard pressed to find any on the left at all.
And then you have podcasts, again dominated by conservatives starting with Joe Rogan. The left has some, but they are not in the same league.
The one part of the media that is totally dominated by the left is the newspapers. But readership continues to plummet and hundreds of newspapers close each year.
I am not putting this post up to take sides. I recognize a right or left bias when I see or hear it and most of the media is not straight down the middle. But the notion that conservatives are the little guy fighting this gigantic left wing mainstream media is false. Conservative media is bigger in totality, make far higher profits, and they are certainly just as much a part of the “mainstream media” as all other media.
Some may not believe this, but ask yourself how DJT media’s new stock, even after the price decline, values his media organization at $4 billion even though they reported revenue of only $4 million last year and lost tens of millions of dollars.
