Wouldn’t it have better then trying these things in court , there couldn’t have been large donations to programs that help pay tuition for needy kids .The whole process seemed to me to be a dog and pony show for prosecutors and for the public a chance to heap all this scorn on people who were only doing what many of them would do if they had the money

In other words you have no problem with the wealthy elites committing crimes.

wow...Concord, Shirley or Walpole prisons in Massachusetts weren't good enough for her.....but they are okay for the common Joe/Jane???

Sounds like the so called 'elite' do get special treatment....just saying

I didn’t see anything about her facing to tile amended tax returns They took a 500K deduction which should result in taxes late fees penalty and income tax evasion

Aggressive deductions usually don't rise to tax evasion.......not reporting income is an accelerator to evasion.

Rosebud1949 09-22-2020 09:41 AM

Will she be able to vote now

Hopefully she will NOT get special treatment nor will she be allowed vote until she has made restitution. ( Like all other prisoners) Hopefully they will keep her in until after the election.. Or she will try to BUY VOTES

Bottom line is ..... harder for whites to get into schools now-a-days - and they have to pay or find a way to get in. Need to change to a spanish surname or put down minority or get an out of country address. Alternative is to pay or pay off, to get in. Just reality here folks.

This subject and the Samsung washing machine scandal are tied for most bland and boring today.

It’s all for the kids. I heard that a lot from boomer parents. Maybe she learned from us.

Sherry8bal 09-22-2020 05:33 PM

If it would have been you or I, we would have received "YEARS" of prison time. Such a joke and just proves to her kids that money can buy anything.

Remember no one is above the law. Now don't laugh.

wamley 09-22-2020 08:00 PM

Both should pay. You don't excuse one bad behavior because somelese also behaves badly. Plenty of room in jails for both. Fraud his fraud.

wamley 09-22-2020 08:06 PM

Can you chew gum and walk at the same time. So can our society. Ever look at an individual States Penal Laws. It's full of different grades of crimes to be charged and most times an illegal act requires serial charges.

Two Bills 09-23-2020 03:53 AM

With our daughter we sailed close to the the wind to help one of our grandsons get into the best school.
Never broke the law, but did use the grey areas in the system to get him there.
Would do it again in a heartbeat.

BryanTheGolfPro 09-23-2020 04:57 AM

Nope. She's done as an actress. The couple's rep is shot. Daughters accept no responsibility--but party on, Dude.

Well, at least she didn't ask my husband or me for any $$. That's more than I can say about the scum bag politicians!

Skunky1 09-23-2020 06:03 AM

A mint on the pillow!

massman 09-23-2020 06:29 AM

Walpole, Concord and Shirley are state prisons. She was convicted on the federal side.

Mikec041 09-23-2020 06:40 AM

Why would they send a California Federal "White Crime" Prisoner to a Maximum Security Prison in Mass? BTW if she had paid that cash directly to the school the kid would have gotten in w/o it being a crime and she would have gotten a tax deduction. The movers and shakers have been doing it for Ions and have buildings named after them.

richs631 09-23-2020 07:23 AM

Believe me, I’m no fan of her but it’s not like she committed the crime of the century

In 2020, what is that??

Squid48 09-23-2020 07:39 AM

You care because?

Johnc 09-23-2020 09:05 AM

Justice would better served to heavily fine her to donate to the needy. Her sitting in a prison serves no greater good. She is not a threat to society.

Actually, as a retired university professor, I don’t have much of a problem with people making very large donations to schools in exchange for the schools admitting a student or two—at full cost. It’s a good way for a school to get something it needs. Even arranging a phony sports scholarship doesn’t bother me much—the real players recognize the ones who aren’t. If they shame the fakes, so what? If the real players make good contacts with the fakes with money, that may help the real players down the line.

I have no doubt that Harvard and Yale are amazing schools, and they have a lot of students who are among the smartest people in the country. The academic competition with other great students and the opportunity to share ideas and learn is terrific for these exceptional students. However, for a lot of students in business and similar fields, the great thing about Harvard and Yale and some of the other Ivy League schools is the opportunity to make contacts with executives and top companies and the children of the elite families in the world. Why does this matter. I have a friend who works at Morgan Stanley and earns three times what I ever earned, but is not an executive. She paid $72,000 or so cash per year to send her son to Colby College, in Maine, which is hard to get into, but nowhere near Harvard level. He played Lacrosse. So, he made powerful friends and had a great Wall Street internship every summer. Before his senior year, he had a firm job offer at a top hedge fund with a starting salary after graduation of $150,000 a year. He didn’t know much, but he was “the right sort of people,” so he was welcomed in. His mom got great value for money. That’s how the system works. That’s what it is for. If your kids don’t want to enter that world or marry into that world, they needn’t both to apply.

The thing is, there are outstanding universities in California, as good as Harvard: UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, Cal Tech, USC, and a lot of others nearly that good. This woman shamed herself, her daughter, and her entire state, mostly for bragging rights.

As they say in Hollywood these days, “Orange Is the New Black.”

I have come to HATE the word ‘privilege‘... but sir your statement sure ‘smells’ like it!!!

DianeR 09-23-2020 12:19 PM

In the Federal prison system, inmates are generally incarcerated at an appropriate facility near their residence. This is not special treatment, just makes sense to allow for visitation by family members.

Taltarzac725 09-23-2020 12:57 PM

The division between the treatment of rich, famous and/or connected and those without these gifts has seemed to get a great deal wider of late.

NoMoSno 09-23-2020 02:13 PM

I suspect she will spend very little, to no time in prison, but will be in home confinement due to covid.
Thousands of more severe criminals have been released from CA prisons due to covid.

mgkw1 09-23-2020 04:40 PM
