Default When changing locking door hardware?

It is time to get new handles/knob for the front doors. After 8 years the cheapo satin bronze looks like junk.

When one gets the new handles with locks/keys is it possible to use the old tumblers/keys in the new hardware?
I know it can be done by a locksmith but is it a DIY type job?

Go to where you buy your new hardware, take your old key and ask them to set the new lock to that key. The only issue is if your old lock is type A and the new one is type B. ie one is Slauge and the other is Hamiliton or other combination. Some type keys don't match other lock receivers.

This might help
How to Rekey a Lock Cylinder | eHow.com

I would test the results before closing the door.
