Ours is also, drives you up the wall. I was told that belt driven is much better and alot less noise. Need to check into that...

I actually want my garage door where I can hear it. Crooks have been known to trick garage doors into opening therefore it's an added layer of security for me to able to hear it during operation.

When I am inside the house with the door to the garage closed, I cannot hear the garage door open/close. I went through a period when it was opening by itself. I would go out to walk the dog and it would be open. I had them change the codes and that stopped. Never did know why it kept opening on its own.

The only time we bought new construction we had the problem with neighbors opening the door when they hit their opener. Come to find out all the openers the builder had put in where set to the same code. Changed the code and never had a problem. Also our current open pad inside has a lock button feature that we like. We can hit it when we go to bed or on vacation (instead of unplugging it ).

Default Garage Doors

One problem with our garage doors is that we are so close to each other, it is too easy to hear your neighbor's garage door opening and closing, and sitting in our kitchen it drives me nuts. These houses have little to no sound proofing what so ever. Thank you Mr. Developer.

You could buy nylon rollers for your neighbors door ! ! Then you won't hear it.
