Dunno my friend. Maybe you could try a bubble bath with an additive of Preparation H, yes? No? Seems to help the bags under the eyes disappear.

Pturner 12-03-2010 06:19 PM

I see character lines, too. Why do other people look at us and see wrinkles. :swear:

And darn it, most men DO look better with age. Not fair, not fair a-tall. :(

Women overweight are "fat" and overweight men are "portly." Hmmmm

Women!!!! Rebel..... and insist that overweight women are "Reubenesque."

I like that.

Any help is greatly appreciated. If you think I should post this under general topics, please let me know. I am soooo miserable and want to get out and do things!!

Hi LisaJ,

I know your post, that I am quoting here, is from several weeks ago, but I thought of it today when the topic of plantar fascitis came up. I had just heard that a friend of mine is having a real battle with plantar fascitis, and so today when I was having a massage, I asked my massage therapist if her training included treating plantar fascitis.

She said yes and said that sometimes the pain is sharp stabs accompanied by burning, and that it is possible that the plantar nerve is entrapped. Then she talked about something called the abductor hallucis (I think) and some other things with scientific names. And I think she said the massage used for this has something to do with the calves and maybe even the Achilles and also warming the area. (But I could not take notes because I was flat on my stomach with my face in that little hole at the table-top and it was hard to write that way so I really do not know for sure what I am trying to say, but it's a start, at least.)

I am a real believer in medical massage and although I have not had plantar fascitis, massage therapy has helped me with other things.

If you have not already tried medical massage, you might want to make some calls to see if you can find a massage therapist who can treat this. Your best bet might be to check with a chiropractor's office that has massage therapists who work there. (I cannot recommend because I am not in TV.)

Anyway, I hope this finds you better and past this miserable thing. But, if not, maybe a series of massages can help you. I wish you the best. I have often heard it said that when your feet hurt, you hurt all over, and I know that sure can be the way it is sometimes.

Hi Boomer-
Thank you so much for your advice. That is a great idea! I am happy to report the PRP therapy is working. My left foot is better and my right foot is 50% better. Can anyone recommend a good medical massage therapist in TV? My calf muscles are very tight and have knots in them. Maybe a massage will do the trick. Thanks again, Boomer!

I would love the name of a good registered massage therapist here in TV. I'm also having a problem with knots in my calf muscles .. I wake up at night and have to jump out of bed. I heard it is due to a lack of calcium but it must be something else?

Have heard that Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis OTC med helps some.

My mother also had the muscle spasms in the calves of her legs and her remedy was to walk on a cold floor and it worked for her. Anything is worth a try, huh? Even the 'ol fashion remedies!

I've had massages at the old site of TV health club where the indoor pool was and was very pleased with one particular gal there who gave a great massage and sorry I don't recall her name. All I remember is that she was a very tall, pleasant blonde gal. That kind of service is more of a trial and error until you find one that suits your needs.

Good luck BF and hope this helps some.....barb1191

When I had horses, my farriers all said that their backs were wrecked because that is a tough job. But that Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM totally helped their backs and that they couldn't be blacksmiths without it.

I've tried Glucosine/Chondroitin/MSM pills and they don't help my back or knees. Nuttin, da nada. I had cortisone shots in my knees and they helped a lot for three months ... but sadly, now they've worn off .. ouch!

I need a Licensed Massage Therapist so I can claim it on my medical plan. Anyone know a great LMT?

One more suggestion.

Hubby Bill was in terrible pain from knee surgery many years ago and obviously is left with arthritis upheavals. A neighbor also suffered from similar constant pain suggested that he try her dr at Leesburg Regional Medical Hospital 600 E DIXIE AVENUE, LEESBURG, FL 34748 main telephone (352) 323 5762. Bill couldn't recall the dr's name, but he thinks he was chief anisthesiologist there and his procedure is a series of epidural injections which worked out fine for Bill and the neighbor as well. He was so pleased to become pain free after the procedure.

HA and you thought the epidural injections were just for childbirth, maybe? ;-)

If you have any questions that Bill may be able to answer for you, PM me and I'll give you our phone #.

Boomer 12-10-2010 11:56 PM

about finding massage therapists

If you do not get a recommendation for a massage therapist, you might try calling the chiropractors' offices in TV. I know you will find that some of them have massage therapists on staff. Ask to speak with the therapist and then you can ask the questions that apply to your particular situation. Sometimes you can find some highly-knowledgeable and experienced medical massage therapists connected with chiropractors' offices.

Lisa, I am glad your plantar fascitis is getting better. After so much time and so much pain, that is wonderful and encouraging.

And I hope things get all worked out.

Barb .. Treatment in the USA would be very expensive for us. We have free medical when we get back to Canada. So I'll hobble for now and visit my arthritis doctor in May. The warmer weather in Florida really helps. It's not bad at all .. I just can't play tennis!

Holiday thoughts

I like my favourite hair coloring salon, but they play rap music. When I asked my beautician if she could change the radio to another station, she said: "Oh, I don't even hear it", and ignored my request. I guess the solution is ear plugs.

I had a pedicure yesterday in a shop on CR 466. The man doing the pedicure coughed continually in my direction without turning his head or covering his mouth.

Probably ten years ago I wouldn't have noticed these things. As I age, I find myself becoming less tolerant, and I don't like it. However there are many choices available in The Bubble. I usually just change establishments rather than complain. I'm working on developing grace and serenity, but it's a slow process. I guess we're always a work in progress.

another Linda 12-15-2010 05:39 PM

Well, I'm working on developing grace and serenity too, but it is hopeless! Just when I think I've made some forward progress, something will really tick me off. Ticked off totally destroys serenity.

Exactly, Ticked off totally destroys serenity. I find myself wanting to say crabby things like: "When I was young, blah, blah, blah" ... and that is a sure sign of inflexible old age. No-one cares, nor should they.

I find deep breathing helps. People probably think I'm having some kind of allergic reaction.

WOW.....You took the words right out of my mouth. How often I say the very same thing. Only time I enjoyed Xmas was when there were youngsters who "believed." How sweet.

My expression as well "bah humbug." Really don't enjoy the commercialism and pressures that's so much a part of this.

It is so interesting how different people are. I happen to be one of those people who loves Christmas (maybe it is because I am a December birthday) however, I have never liked Halloween. I hated dressing up as a kid with those hot sweaty masks and itchy costumes. I always made my husband take our kids out trick or treating and stayed home and handed out the candy. (I really didn't like that job either). Then the kids would eat to much candy and get sick!!!! As an adult, I still don't like Halloween parties. Oh well, I think that is what makes all of us so unique. Can you imagine all of us going to a Halloween party if we all didn't like Halloween? Same goes for a Christmas party. I find I have a better time when I see others really enjoying themselves. To those of you who don't like Christmas, I hope you have an enjoyable time. Please tell me the same thing when Halloween rolls around.

Who knew? Who knows?

Until yesterday, I had never heard of gloves that are designed so that you can text while keeping your hands warm. I am giving a gift of a scarf and gloves to someone who just got a new coat. But I had never heard of these gloves.

I don't even have one of those smart phones yet. A while back, I got so confused over whether to get a Droid or an iPhone. I could not decide. Oh dear. So I just kept my old phone. (But I did decide to buy a few shares of T and a few shares of VZ.)

So anyway, I realize that a lot of you are are in Florida and have abandoned your gloves. But, just in case, I thought I would ask.....

Does anybody know anything about these 21st Century gloves? Brand or style recommendations? Thank you.

I remain,

Barefoot 12-19-2010 12:50 PM

Boomer, unfortunately we haven't abandoned gloves here completely. We had a few freezing nights lately and very cool days. The golf courses were empty for a couple of days. I wore my down-filled jacket and gloves to the dog park on those days. But I digress.

I haven't heard of gloves you wear while texting, but of course, it makes sense. Texting is an epidemic these days. Someone took a simple idea and will be a millionaire.

I have this fantasy that I'll be the one to think of the next big "must have". The ideas are all so obvious and simple. For years I wore a bathrobe backwards when I wanted to curl up with a good book and be snuggly and warm. And my husband laughed at me.

Now someone invented snugglies, and everyone has to have at least one. Bah Humbug.

Lisa, I never heard of anyone who hated Halloween! That is so interesting .. everyone is unique. As an adult, I find there is a certain freedom to Halloween. Dressing up and pretending to be someone else is kind of cool.

It is the present thing about Christmas that I don't like. People seem to spend all their time before Christmas buying gifts. And complaining about how much money they're spending. And the recipients seem to spend all their time after Christmas returning the gifts or trying to give them away. Christmas is great if you have young kids around though, they really enjoy Christmas.

Hi girls,

And thank you Pturner and kathyzapp for the gloves-info. You found much prettier ones than I did.

I ended up at Macy's where I bought one of the last pairs of Isotoner's SmarTouch.

I still like my two pairs of soft leather unlined gloves that I have had for a hundred years, at least. One black pair and one navy blue pair. But I have nothing with a touch-screen yet.

But my old gloves that I love, well.....what can I say.....they fit me like....a glove.

Ohiogirl 12-23-2010 10:17 AM

I am impressed that anyone can keep (without losing) gloves (or umbrellas) for years and years. I haven't worn any (except golf gloves) here in the Villages yet, and probably never will - used them in Ohio only for walking the dog and until the car warmed up on my way to and from work.

That is not because I don't need them (is this why my hands are always dry? - I just attributed that to getting older), but because I can either never find them or have already lost them (or one of them). I tend to put them in a pocket and apparently lose one on it's way out or something. I don't wash the cloth ones (never owned them long enough to need it), so it can't be the same as the one sock syndrome :)

Speaking of the one-sock syndrome, I use safety pins to connect pairs of socks before washing. You never lose another sock and it makes sorting laundry a breeze.

Enjoy this housekeeping tip, it is the only one I know. :a040:

The commercialism of Christmas is what kills the joy of the season. Thankfully, when I and my siblings were in our 20's, we all decided as a family to stop giving each other gifts. Instead, we looked forward to spending time together and with our parents. On Christmas Eve, we had lots of finger foods, sliced turkey & ham for sandwiches, watched movies, and attended midnight Mass. Afterward, we had another party and then slept in on Christmas morn. Well, that changed when my brother had children. We gave gifts Christmas morning to the little ones and that was fun, but we stuck with the tradition of not giving gifts to each other. I think it put the spirit of love and joy into the celebration, and I believe it was one of the best decisions our family ever made.

Mineral Makeup

Hi Girls, (hope I'm posting this in the right place!)
Has anyone here tried mineral foundation? You know, the powder stuff
that you "dust" onto your face, covering all flaws with a swoosh of a brush and making you look better than real?
I will probably have to change my makeup once I get to TV, and I hear this stuff 'breathes'. I'm gonna need [U]some[U]coverage, as I have some broken capillaries and other wonders here and there.
Does this stuff adhere? I imagine it blowing off in the wind, or falling into my coffee. Is it compatible with sunscreen? Does it irritate your skin? (after all, it is supposed to be ground up minerals) Will I look like a goofball? Am I gonna make a mess with it in my bathroom sink?
Any experienced advice will be gratefully accepted. Thanks!

Actually, I've got some and it doesn't irritate my skin. I prefer not to use it because it makes my face feel hot in the summer, but my Mom in law uses is and loves it. If I remember the literature correctly, it might act as a sunscreen on some small level.

There is a trick to using the makeup, it's brushed on and it can be really easy to get too much on. If you've ever watched Leslie Blodgett on QVC working with Bare Minerals, she tells you to use so very little you think it's not going on.....but is does. Really, it looks good when applied correctly, just as any other make-up does. The blush is great and the eye minerals are really nice, too. Get good brushes, it makes application easier.

Hi Up,

Thanks for asking this question. That's because there are times during which there is nothing better for the spirit than getting into a little bit (or a lot) of girl talk. It works even when you can't actually see the girls you are talking to. That has been proven by the longevity of this thread, started by Barefoot almost 3 years ago.

So about that makeup question.....well, hang on because I am about to digress on the topic of makeup in general. I was thinking a few days ago about asking here in Girl Talk about favorite makeups, and then I forgot about it. I am glad you brought up the topic.

We girls work really hard on our makeup, with the goal of trying to look like we are not wearing makeup.

I know we all have our makeup favorites, and we can be intensely loyal to those favorites. But way too often cosmetic companies decide to change the line. And that makes me seriously toy with the idea of becoming a hoarder of those few makeup brands that have my loyalty.

Over and over, I buy a Lancome eye pencil that Lancome calls Le Crayon Poudre. Ahhh, such a fancy-schmancy name -- a name that I am certain makes Lancome feel entitled to charge fools like me 20-some bucks for a little brown stick. I line my eyes with it and then smear the liner around and wipe most of it off. -- Can’t look like I am wearing eyeliner -- right? I make myself feel better for being had on the price of the little brown stick because it lasts about a year. And I don’t spend much on mascara. Still buying that good old Maybelline in the pink and green tube at the drugstore. Been using that one for years.

I started using a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation a few years ago. The best one I have found is from Elizabeth Arden. I bought a new tube of it yesterday. (I had reached the point you all know about -- when you get to where you have run out, but yet a glimmer of pathetic optimism makes you get the scissors and hack up the tube to get to the very last dregs.)

When I finally went to the mall to buy a new tube, the woman at the counter said the formula had been changed. (EEK! I knew I should have been hoarding that stuff. Too late now.) The new version is called Pure Finish Mineral Tinted Moisturizer. The SPF is 15. Minerals are the new part. Have not used it yet. Will see.

I usually finish things off with a little Elizabeth Arden AeroMatte ultralucent pressed powder. I cannot use loose powder. My contact lenses would hate it.

Now, here is the part of my dissertation that if it works for you, I will be your new best friend....

Before I put on the tinted moisturizer, I use a product that I learned about at a makeup counter two years ago and I still love it. Special Camouflage by Paula Dorf New York. It is in a tiny container with half yellow and half peachy-pink. The yellow tames those too-pink places you want to cover. It's the yellow part that works better to camouflage pink spots on your face than anything I have ever found.

Again, it costs a stupid amount of money. Yesterday, it cost me 23 bucks for the tiny jar, up from 20 bucks when I first discovered the stuff. It’s a really tiny jar and I only want the yellow part. But I buy it and I live in fear that Paula Dorf will stop making it. (Don’t think I have not noticed that the name Paula Dorf has a remarkable similarity to that other Paula – my arch-nemesis Paula Deen – the only woman in the world that I just KNOW Mr. Boomer would leave me for.)

But, I digress, back to Paula Dorf……

One day, my sister and I were together at the makeup counter and we were getting a little concerned because the sales rep could find only ONE of these Paula Dorf things. But she finally managed to find a second one, thank goodness. Had she not, my sister and I might have reverted to our childhood days of fighting like only sisters can. You know -- hair-pulling and scratching and pinching and biting and all that stuff of fond childhood memories. (I wonder how that would have gone over in a major department store aisle.)

Well, I certainly have managed to go on and on a bit and probably was no help at all....unless Paula Dorf works for those parts you want to cover. And if that happens, you will owe me a cyber-glass of wine sometime here in the Girl Talk thread where we will toast camouflage.

Here's a link to Paula Dorf stuff.

I love to talk about makeup because aren't we all just searching for that foundation or anti-aging cream that makes us look a dewy 25 again.

I have a feeling that Paula Dorf may get a sudden depletion of her Special Camouflage! Boomer, thanks for sharing that tip. What stores carry Paula Dorf products?

Uptown Girl, you're in exactly the right thread to natter on about makeup because guys aren't allowed to read this thread. Well, sometimes Tony drops by, to make sure we're keeping it clean! But he's the only guy that is allowed.

There is a hair salon called Root 466 in The Villages (located in Southern Trace Plaza) which is a distributor for Bare Minerals. You can stop by with a bare face and they'll do mineral makeup for you. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to. You can try before you buy.

I just bought some Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation SPF 20 to give it a try. And I quite like it. It's light, which is nice when it is hot. And instead of two steps (tinted moisturer plus powder), you can just do one step.

By the way, Barb, thanks a bunch for the info about the treadmill!

Maybelline Elizabeth Boomer

Maybelline Elizabeth Boomer... (I LOVE that!!) My new and fabulous friend! And, OH YAY!... I have been looking for yellow camouflage forever... truly I have, and this may be just what I need!
See, I'm a painter. Have done portraits and figures over time and realize how many colors make up wonderful skin on canvas. Sometimes wished I could just paint them on my face and be done with it!
Hugs to all for your REAL tips and insight. Did some research last night and found that the mineral foundation formulas aren't all equal, and some have ingredients that won't work for me (talc especially reeks havoc...) Think that I will ponder it awhile longer. At least until my current stuff is depleted. Then, I'll look for a free demo locally!
Thanks again... Smooch!

Minerals

Yep, I have used it and like it....just a thought...they are micro particles and Dr Oz is concerned about it getting into the lungs so when you brush it on don't breath it in. He was also concerning around the eyes. When I put it on a brush it does seem to make a mess on my counter....when I try to get some off of the brush cause I got too much on.

Will be interested to know about the tinted moisturizer tho....Let us know what you think.

Bare Minerals

I have been using Bare Minerals for years. I love it. It really gives a finished look without being heavy. I like to put it on before my exercise classes because AFTER I exercise I can look like a red beet. It is a quick brush application. I use the skin rev-er-upper AND primer lotion for all day wear. Just a drop of each! I have tried the Maybelline minerals and the other mineral (Joan Lunden promotes?) but I feel there is a difference.

I think that many of Dr. Oz' concerns and recommendations are designed to be controversial and get him publicity. Of course, it doesn't hurt to be careful.

I'm not a fan of Dr. Oz, but I do like the new show "The Doctors". The moderator is very cute! Oh - I'm so shallow. :mornincoffee:
