Default Thinking of relocating to the Villages

I'm 48 - widowed - I've visited some friends of my mother's in the Villages for the second time now. Each time I've left I've felt an urge to move there. I'm born, raised and lived my entire life in and around Dayton, Ohio so moving is a bit daunting to me (even though I've about had it with this lousy cold weather). I thought if maybe I could talk to some other women who have done the same it would help me decide what's best for me. Does anyone have any comments? I would want a part-time job and a place to rent for awhile.

Good for you, you are obviously a woman of courage!! If you check "singles" on the search button, (black bar above), I bet you'll get lots of helpful information.

Best of luck

I just moved here last September and I love it here.

There are some problems if you need the income -- part-time jobs are plentiful but pay little. $10/hr. is considered a good wage.

Finding a long-term rental is a little difficult but definitely doable. A lot depends how long you think you will want to rent. If you check the rental forum here, you'll see at least one property willing to take long-term renters.

The one thing I would check out is if The Villages will allow you to get a guest ID as a renter under 55. I don't know if this would be an issue but would hate to have you come here and then find out you couldn't use the facilities because of the age factor. I do know you can purchase under 55, so I think it wouldn't be a problem.

Hope this helps you in making your decision. Personally, I love it here and don't regret the move.

Thank you - esp. Redwitch. Do you know anyone under 55 living in The Villages?

I've met a couple. VillagesKid knows several. I'm a "young 'un" here (just turned 57) but age really doesn't matter. Once you find you're friends, you're happily accepted by all in the group. I've seen groups where the ages range from late 40s to early 80s, all enjoying their time together. TV really does keep you young at heart.

Hi Katydid, we moved here in Nov. and can't say enough good things about it. I really never feel like this is just a "couples" community. Most of the time I'm off with the girls to some class or just having lunch. I think that only one member of the household must be 55, but I'm not sure about that. So at 48, I really don't know if that's a problem. I'm trying to get my best friend to move down her when she's ready. She's divorced and keeps thinking it's all couples but it's not. There all ages, at the classes, town squares, and social events. You'll love it here.

I would talk to TV about being 48. My wife and I are young uns Webought 3 years ago I was 50 and my wife was a mere child at 46. I believe that 20% of the occupants can be under 55. The Villages real estate agent told us their cut off was 50. Dont know if that was true or still the case with this down market. But a call to TV would certainly give you that answer.

The original post was February 23, 2008, less than two months shy of five years ago. The OP would probably be 53 by now. Good things come to those who can wait.
